Honestly, this is just your standard LS class. I personally thought it was way easier than 7A because you can honestly answer most test questions just using logic. The launchpad was annoying and not very helpful as always, but I just skipped through most of the reading. The clicker questions were great and very reflective of exam questions. The labs every week were absolutely useless and a waste of time, but unfortunately mandatory. Overall, very easy class, I would definitely take it again.
Tonya isn't a bad professor, but her lectures are not engaging. You are required to attend lecture, and they check this with the Reef app. I preferred Tonya over Kremer because she is much better at explaining the clicker questions. Your grades are made up of Launchpad assignments, participation on Reef, lab sections, 2 midterms, a final, and a few extra credit opportunities. The midterms were pretty straightforward, but the final for this class was a bit different from the midterms. Lab sections are long, but most TAs will let you leave early if you finish before section is over. Most lab sections are conducted in breakout rooms with groups of other students. Tonya waited until the last day to put in our grades. I wouldn't exactly recommend this class to anyone but most of us have to take it for our prerequisites, so Tonya isn't a bad option.
Dr. Kane was an OK professor. She wasn't outstanding, she wasn't horrible, she was OK. The course was co-taught with Dr. Kremer, which honestly presented its own set of challenges. Dr. Kane and Kremer lectured a bit differently even though the vibe of their presentation slides were the same. Dr. Kane was more thorough in her explanations, especially for the clicker questions. However, towards the end of the course, it felt as if she was exhausted. Our second midterm had many errors so I emailed the professors right away, and had no response for almost an hour, and I ended up having to restart the midterm even though I was 95% done. Office Hours with Dr. Kane was my key to success on Midterm 1 and 2, but the OH's closer to the final provided less clarity and felt almost useless. Midterm 1 was challenging, Midterm 2 was the easiest, and the Final was downright disrespectful. This was due to the LS7 formatting of exam questions. The T/F and multiple choice can be easily confusing! Despite everything I just said, this was definitely easier than 7A, and that says quite a bit considering I was one of the lucky students who got an automatic A+ on the 7A final in the Spring quarter.
I am genuinely shocked that someone enjoyed Kane's class. She acts like a high school teacher still trying to get some type of power over the students; she once literally told the class that we couldn't leave until she dismissed us. She's alright at getting the concepts across, though they're so straightforward that not a lot of teaching is required, but her attitude was horrific. She gave us this lecture before course evals were due about how unfairly women professors were treated in reviews, which on its own I absolutely agree with—they're respected less and not seen as an authority which is horrible. However, she was the absolute worst person to deliver that speech given that her behavior was intolerable regardless of gender. Yeah, you'll get an A in the class, but you would have to pay me to get me to sit through 10 more weeks of Kane. Every professor has the same exams which you can get through just using logic and reasoning, so avoid her if you can.
I liked this class a whole lot more than 7A. Kane was very clear with her lectures and explained all the clicker questions very clearly. She also has very cute dogs and I appreciated her showing us them from time to time.
Ok, so personally, I felt this class was a small step down from the magnificence of Maloy in 7A. The class felt a bit more disorganized, with lab sections being rushed with a rigid due date right after section and the fact that the information being taught is a bit more conceptual than 7A. That might be my personal preference for 7A material speaking, but genetics is kind of confusing initially and ecology/evolution are semi-intuitive. On the other hand, Professor Kane is extremely chill and fun with her pets in the background of her presentations. Overall, a mediocre course with a chill professor.
Professor Kane was nice and clear with her lectures. She was engaging with her students and even showed her dogs during the beginning of zoom. Since we were online, every lecture was recorded. If you took LS7A, you know all about Launchpad and how tedious it can be sometimes, but honestly the Launchpad assignments ended up boosting my grades in the end. The PEQs for Launchpad are timed, so make sure to treat them like an actual quiz. The midterms were fair, even if some of the graphs were hard to interpret. I had the best TA (shoutout to Graham Montgomery; take the lab section with him if you can), so the lab was pretty fun. Overall, the class is what you would expect from a Life Science class, and Kane is a pretty good professor
Best class so far in the LS 7 Series. Dr. Kane was never the most knowledgeable about topics if you ever had deeper questions to ask her, but she was always able to teach you enough to prepare you for exams, which is all that was necessary. She gives a TON of extra credit through surveys and "mini-midterms" after exams to get points back, and the class is full of free points in general. Labs were extremely boring but 135 free points, as my TA, Shomik, literally graded on completion and made the class the best. First midterm was a breeze. Second midterm and final were a little harder, but it's almost impossible to not get an A in this class.
Professor Kane was the most absolute sweetheart. I would retake this class if I could. The work was clear and very manageable. I took this class over the summer during the 6-week session and it went by extremely fast which was awesome. I never had a true interest in the marine side of ecology but after this class, I might not be so sure anymore. The class was structure to a method I really enjoy learning, so maybe that is why I also enjoyed the class. You had modules due every week ranging from 2-4 that had quizzes to go with them. There was a midterm during week 4 (no work that week) and then of course the Final Exam. The exams were very reasonable and very straightforward. I loved her exams for that reason since she wasn't trying to trick you on any of the questions. It was just a matter of looking through your notes and matching the best answer. The discussion portion was not bad either, I did like the lecture just a bit more though. Oh, also the quizzes you took could be opened for days as they were not timed and due on a specific day. So you had plenty of time to construct and find answers.
Really fun, doable class that dives (haha) into conservation, marine life, chemical cycles, physical cycles!
This class consisted of 1-2 weekly multiple choice "quizzes" or homework assignments that assessed basic knowledge from lecture recordings, other videos, and the assigned readings. They're super doable, and you can use your notes to help you! We also had 2 midterms and a final, and all were very very fair exams.
Overall, really straightforward and enjoyable class!
