This class was SO frustrating for me. As a student who is not a natural at chemistry, I knew I had to work 5x harder than the average student to achieve the same grade. However, despite going to office hours, scheduling private meetings, and studying for hours, I just couldn't get do well on her exams. Her questions are confusing and meant to trip you up, which as an incoming freshman is not conducive to a positive first quarter experience. Her class had me questioning my major and if I even deserved to go to UCLA. Her lecture style is pretty boring and her slides don't have nearly enough detail. I wanted to like her and this class but I just felt like she wanted me and the other students in her class to fail to prove her toughness as a professor. Honestly if you can take another professor for 14A I would genuinely recommend it.
I loved her class. I was so worried about taking chemistry in college, but her class made me feel more confident in my abilities. At the beginning, the class definitely was difficult, but Dr. Casey wants you to succeed. If you are struggling, just go talk to her.
I think she made the midterm ridiculously hard for no reason at all. In one sense she was setting you up to not get a good score. Another thing, finals were during the COVID pandemic and honestly I was having a breakdown the day it got posted and emailed her begging to let me opt out of it, but nope, still had to take it. I think she cares a lot more about keeping the 'integrity of the course' than making someones day a little better. So many other professors offered opt out options and the college even encouraged professors to allow opt out options! But nope, here we had to do it, for this course because it was so necessary during a global pandemic. To be fair the final was Mon-Wed and collaboration was allowed, however I do not see why an opt out option was something too 'unsophisticated' for her to offer for a 14BL. She just kept mentioning upholding the 'integrity of the course' in her emails amidst COVID 19 outbreak. Hope the integrity of this 14 series LAB course was worth my stress and anxiety to her. Really did not enjoy her as a professor.
I had Dr. Casey along with Dr. Caram and Dr. Prado, and I feel that both Dr. Prado and Dr. Casey really made me appreciate Chemistry. They were both very approachable and would answer all of my million questions during office hours. The coursework itself consists of reviewing material that will be on the quizzes and doing the recommended homework. I would 100% recommend this professor for Chem 14A.
This class is very challenging. Professor Casey has a unique teaching style that I personally did not click with. She was not straightforward with her lectures or with her homework. I felt confused taking this class because I did not know exactly what to study and in what order. This class requires extreme effort to do well, as in actually going to office hours. The pdf of the textbook is on the ucla textbook page for free. I would recommend buying the solutions manual for the homework problems as they are helpful step by step guides and taught me more than anything else. Always do all of the problems recommended. Do not forget to turn in the CPR assignment-- which actually sucks. It is an actual writing assignment in a chemistry class and for south campus majors like me this is not okay. Chemistry is hard and Casey is liked and disliked but I would not recommend her.
TAKE BL WITH CASEY AND ONLY CASEY. 14Bl is a work heavy class but the content isn't too difficult as you can probably tell from the grade curve. Professor Casey was absolutely amazing and I thoroughly enjoyed her class. She is engaging during lecture and quite funny too. She teaches the material in a very straightforward and clear manner. When it comes to answering questions, she does her utmost to ensure that you are getting the right help and guidance whether that is through the discussion forum or in person during office hours. I am waiting to take Cl with Casey. If she is teaching any other type of chem course, even if she hasn't taught it before, take her.
i enjoyed chem 14A w prof Casey. She uploads all the lecture slides a day before class, which is really awesome. imo the homework problems don't help that much with tests but are rly similar to the quizzes. Dr. Casey is super nice and approachable, and i loved taking her class. She also gives out clicker points, group finals, discussion points, surveys, etc. which helps a lot w the grade!! take her if u can!!
Dr Casey is awesome! She's good at teaching and is really patient and caring as well. Besides she manages to make a relatively boring lab course slightly more bearable, so definitely take her if you can.
Dr. Casey was a great lecturer and professor, giving students help during office hours and on Piazza on a very timely basis. However, the class itself should not be underestimated. First, the workload is relatively heavy compared to other classes. There are pre-labs and post-labs due every week along with one three-hour lab section and one one-hour lecture. There are two tests only, one midterm and a final. Go over lecture notes and study guide posted on CCLE when studying. The study guide can be daunting because it goes into specific details not covered in class or lab, but not everything on the study guide is tested and you will probably have an idea of the major topics that will be asked (usually things explained extensively in lecture). Looking over pre-labs and post-labs will also help especially when it comes to paying attention to procedures such as when to use which lab equipment, but you don't have to know the details of how each lab was conducted. Lastly, know the concept behind the topics not just the calculations because the final consists of a lot of "why" questions where you will have to explain your answer choices. All in all, this class is manageable if you stay on top of your stuff and seek help when needed.
