I would highly recommend this class. Even though it was during a six-week summer session, the class was very understandable thanks to Dr. Casey's in-depth explanations. Definitely go to her office hours, Casey is very approachable and wants you to succeed. The exams are challenging but fair. We also had a group final exam during discussion, which was more difficult, and your grade in that is dependent on the ability of your group. The textbook is confusing, so I would recommend going over the discussion worksheets and slides to better understand the content.
This class is NOT easy, and definitely very challenging. Fortunately Casey is a great professor, so there's that! Selling graded A labs from last quarter (winter 2017). Email me ************* for prices!
Professor Casey is really sweet and understanding. Her weekly assignments were not that time consuming, however there is one writing assignment that she gives around the end of the quarter that takes up a lot of time. The grading system is okay at first, but towards the end you realize how quickly you can lose points. The midterms or “application assessments” are challenging and are graded toughly. In order to do good in them, it is important that you fully understand the concepts conceptually and that you can apply them. I did not do good on my first one at all and I believe that is what caused me to get a B+ instead of a higher grade. She hosts a lot of office hours and LA workshops and those are very helpful. Discussions are important for understanding the concepts and I had a group that was not very collaborative and I think that might have affected how much of the content I understood. Of your discussion group is not great, try to switch towards the start of the quarter. I tried switching but there was no other groups that had room so I was stuck with my group. Her final was okay, better than the application assessments, but it is worth a lot so be careful not to mess up on it (worth 100/350 total class points).
TLDR: She is a great professor, but you have to do attend a lot of office hours or the extra workshops she offers to make sure you fully understand the content. Try not to mess up on the first few assignments because that will affect your overall grade tremendously.
Dr. Casey really is a godsend. If you have the opportunity to take Chem 14CL with her, do not pass it up! She is so sweet, approachable, friendly, caring, and intelligent. Her office hours are truly helpful, and she'll often go over answers to the pre-lab questions and give very specific help with your post-labs. Make sure to go to her office hours before CPR assignments also, otherwise you will likely lose points. I really appreciate that unlike some other professors, she's really not trying to trick you. Casey will answer questions directly and straightforwardly, while obviously still trying to maintain the integrity of the assignment. Her exams are fair, but really make sure to focus on conceptual content. As in, truly focus on the material presented on the slides, ask questions about things you may be unclear about in office hours, and recognize that the problem sets are math-heavy but her exams truly are concept-heavy.
I had a lot of anxiety during the midterm and I completely misinterpreted multiple questions, which made the difference between me getting a ~90% and actually getting a 64%. It was an absolute nightmare, given that I felt like I genuinely knew the material. It was especially traumatizing considering that I'm used to getting 90s in chem. But, don't be deterred because in our class the midterm literally only counted for 9% of the grade.
What helped me was definitely that Casey was extraordinarily encouraging. I developed a rapport with her during 14BL when I was generally having a harder time (outside academics), and she literally told me to just set up an appointment with her whenever I wanted to speak to her. After that, she would ALWAYS greet me by name whenever she would see me, and that was so, so sweet.
This quarter when I let her know that, as a student with disabilities, who also has phone anxiety, that I was super uncomfortable with making phone calls to ask questions during exams... she really went out of her way to try to support me. We discussed it, and she tried to really emphasize that she wanted me to feel comfortable, so she actually stopped by personally in my separate testing location to help answer questions.
Casey really, really, really cares about her students. And she's a truly engaging lecturer also. With her support, and also recognizing that she HEAVILY emphasizes concepts, I was able to get an 87% on the final and ultimately about 93-94% in the class for a solid A.
The professor is approachable and provides appropriate accomodations. She is a very clear and engaging lecturer. However, the class is horribly structured for an online format. There are too many resources to keep track of (I am not exaggerating). Although this is a 3 unit lab, I spent at least 12+ hours each week on this lab. The exams are doable but do require you to spend a considerable amount of time to study and understand the course material. Group lab reports are difficult to complete in an online learning environment because everyone has different availabilites so communication with your group partners is key, especially if you're taking this lab online. If you're a hands-on or visual learner, I do not recommend taking this course online as you will find it difficult to remember the experimental procedures from a pdf. I am taking an incomplete and will update my review after finishing this course.
Tl;dr: Great professor, horrible class structure and workload.
This class was unnecessarily hard and excessive. The content was not too bad but the tests were harder than they should be, especially for a lab course. Likewise, this class required more work than classes that are four or five units and a lot of it was not helpful. The grading is also harsh and unfair. Do not take Casey if you don't want to waste your time and mess up your gpa.
Casey is an absolute sweetheart. She jointly taught with Prado and Caram for our 14A class when our original professor bounced unexpectedly. There were kinda two camps of students: those that had taken AP Chem and seen 90% of what we were doing and those that this was completely new to. I was of the former, and, because of it, didn't have to do much work. The class used iclicker points based partially on if you were correct , but there are enough opportunities that you could probably never be right and still get full points. There's homework but it is not collected and I didn't find it or the book helpful in the slightest so I never utilized those. There were weekly quizzes that were awful for the first two because the time crunch was impossible, but after students voiced their concerns our instructors were completely receptive and adapted the remaining quizzes; they were then pretty easy. The midterms were a mixed bag: one had a low D average and the other had a mid B average (made easier to compensate for the first one). I got a 90% and 94% on the midterms, but then got an 81% on my final. Because we had lost the first week, the ending was kinda crammed so the final focused on a concept that I knew I didn't really understand all that well. The average was a 70%. The class was ultimately curved a couple percentage points in our favor I believe, because my raw score was an A- and I received an A. Honestly if you're worried about 14A, don't be. It's entirely do-able as long as you maintain responsibility for understanding the material. Casey is a fantastic lecturer, easily able to explain concepts at their simplest level and build it up slowly so anyone can understand. She's funny and warm and never makes anyone feel unwelcome or shut down. She is also so in-tune with her students and can sense confusion without anyone even saying anything and adapts the course in response. I would take her again in a heartbeat.
Dr. Casey is my absolute favorite person on this whole planet. She is the kindest human being that you will ever meet. She is incredibly intelligent and knows everything there is to know about chemistry. If you don't understand a topic, go to office hours and she will walk you through it until you know it like the back of your hand. She genuinely cares about learning and isn't out to tank your grade. Get to know her! She gives off mom vibes! It's so comforting when youre a depressed freshman to know that there's a professor that actually cares about you and knows your name. I got lucky with her! She wasn't supposed to teach 14A this quarter but something happened to my professor and she was thrown into teaching it on day 3 of first week. I LOVE HER!!! TAKE HER!!! THANK ME LATER
As all of us pre-meds know, UCLA's chemistry classes are brutal. But, Dr. Casey is the icon of what a chemistry professor should be like. Unlike some chemistry professors I've had, Dr. Casey genuinely cares about her students' progress and achievements. I'm sorry to say, but if you do poorly in this class, it's ALL ON YOU. She offered up to 12.5 points of extra credit, and although that may not seem like a lot, without the extra credit, I would've gotten an A- ; so, it makes quite a big of a difference. The lab assignments in this class are very time consuming, but honestly, there are so many resources to utilize that getting a 100% in the lab report category isn't far from reach. On the other hand, the exams are pretty difficult. The midterm average for our class was 74%, and the final average was 72%. To succeed on the exams, be sure to do all the problem sets, exam study guides, and go over the lecture notes/lab materials. Seriously, be on top of your game, seek help when needed, and you'll be just fine. Props to you, Dr. Casey.
I do not like chemistry and I don't like Dr. Casey even more. She made me cry and want to drop UCLA my first quarter here. I do not recommend her. I do not recommend Chem 14A either. Pick a different major.
