I normally don't write reviews, but this professor is awful. His lectures comprise of 10-15 minutes of actual information about the subject and the rest of the class is him ranting about current issues. His grading is awful as he only gives out a certain amount of A's, B's, and C's which means that you may get a lower score if your test is graded last even if you have the same answers as someone who got a higher grade and turned it in earlier (his tests are short answer). He is very sketchy with his grading and the final grades seemed kinda arbitrary. Also, he did not post what we got on our paper or our final which comprised about 60% of our grade, therefore I had to email him to figure out what I got. I did 1.5 points better than someone else in the class on the midterm and we got the same grades for all the other assignments and she received a B while I received an A-, so basically if you want to be graded fairly do NOT take this class. This class caused me so much frustration and I honestly have no idea how a professor like him is allowed to teach at UCLA because he is costing people their chances at grad school due to his stupid grading scale (which he refuses to explain to the students).
Had an asynchronous class with him, absolutely horrible. He was so monotone and made it as difficult as possible to follow the lectures. His lack of enthusiasm has drained already a very draining academic year. He grades on a curve and he does not give any indication of how you did on exams. (I got D on midterm because I "misinterpreted" one of the prompts"). I do not recommend at all.
I didn't do great on the midterm or the one page discussion essays. I thought I could kind of just wing it, but that didn't work out. I studied more for the final and ended up getting an A- when I for sure thought I would get a B. DO the readings and take note of little details, also go to Jepson's office hours! No one really goes and he answered questions about the final for me that really helped.

Professor Jepson was a great Sociology 1 professor. His lectures are incredibly engaging, despite having lecture at 8 am. All of the readings are done on articles. Three articles must be read every week; two for lecture and another for discussion. Try to keep up to date on articles, since it is easy to fall behind. Lectures are important to attend because he expands on the two articles read for the lecture. The final and midterm are difficult because a close reading of the articles is needed in order to do well. This class changed my mind on many subjects and made me be inquisitive, plus professor Jepson made himself available and welcomed students to ask questions during office hours. This class made me switch to a major in Sociology. Also, I would like to add, the TA Caitlin is great.
He was a great professor. Though, lecture could get boring and it being at 8am wasn't the best. Yet, I could tell Jepson really tried. I received an A in the class in the end and for the midterm had gotten a B. All you need to do is do the readings and really understand them. As far as grading goes, it all depends on your TA. They are the ones grading the papers so attend discussion.

Little highlighting in it and IN VERY GOOD CONDITION! Call/ text me at **********.
This class is really engaging and eye-opening. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone looking for an interesting yet manageable GE to take because the content of the class is definitely thought-provoking. If you are interested in income inequality, race divisions, gender, structures of government, and more, this is a class for you. Yes the teacher doesn't use slides, but he does post notes on CCLE and speaks at a nice slow pace. He's also really approachable and funny. The workload is also completely manageable - 3 moderately long (average about 15 pages) articles to read a week. Not going to lie, the final and midterm are pretty hard and you won't do well if you don't read the articles closely. However, they both follow the same format (50 MC and 2 free response from 6 topics). If you basically memorize your answers to the study guides you will be fine. Your TA also is a major influence over your grade so stay on their good side! Email me if you want my study materials (*************).
Professor Jepson is awesome. He is super funny and always goes off on a tangent. Easy GE and totally worth it even though most of his classes are 8am. Textbook readings are helpful and very interesting. Jepson's lectures are based on the readings so if you don't do the readings he goes much more in depth in class.
If interested, I'm selling his reader. My email is *************
This class was a fair class. Midterm and final are both essay sections in class and one paper. The book is needed to study for the tests, it helps a lot and is easy to understand. I am selling the class book if anyone is interested. My number is **********
Selling Course reader, no marks or highlights, in great condition for $45

I enjoyed the class even though it was at 8 in the morning. I genuinely feel like I learned a lot after taking the class and it was a great experience. Jepson makes the class fun with his humor and how passionate he is about the subject.
