Professor Esdin is amazing. He is very supportive of all his students and takes his time to make sure that you understand the material. The class content in his course is definitely more challenging than the previous 7 series courses, but by doing the assigned work and keeping up with lectures, you can do very well. His lectures are clear and very thorough for all the material and you can tell that he cares about the success of the students in the class.
The tests are challenging and since they are standardized for the whole series, the professor you have doesn't really impact its difficulty. However, I can say that having taken the 7 series with a different professor each quarter, Esdin was definitely the most helpful and engaging. 100% recommend Professor Esdin for 7C.
The quizzes and tests for this class is pretty much ALL MEMORIZATION from the course reader, so if you're good with memorization then you'll do great on them. There's a project that seems really intimidating at first, but is actually pretty easy, only a bit time-consuming and tedious. Start as early as you can! The lecture content is actually super interesting and very applicable to life, and I really, really liked it. Esdin is a nice professor and definitely one of the better profs I've had at UCLA so far. If you need a straightforward and interesting class that will likely boost your GPA, this is it.
I took this class Fall quarter of my Freshman year. This is a great class to satisfy a GE and learn about your body in the process. I took the class because my roommate convinced me to take it with her and ended up loving the subject. The readings are very easy to follow, as are lectures. Labs meet only every other week which is amazing.
As long as you go to lecture everything will be good.
There is no real homework, only a workbook to finish by the end of Week 10.
We had two quizzes, a multiple choice mid term, and two lab quizzes on the material we just learned.
The only assignment is Fitness Assessment.
Prof Esdin is the best. The class is designed to be easy, and there is very little work required.
Your grade consists of the following:
- Attendance to lectures and labs
- 2 online lecture quizzes
- 2 lab quizzes (which you can use notes you take during lab)
- 1 lab presentation (full points are given for completion)
- 1 project (which is easy and can be done in a day or 2 at most)
- 1 workbook (due at the end of the quarter covering 8 chapters of the course reader)
- The midterm (50 multiple choice on a computer)
- The final (40 multiple choice on a computer)
- Teacher evaluations
The midterm and the final are the only places where you can get lots points off, but these are both fairly simple multiple choice tests. Esdin gives answers to these during lecture (2 answers to the midterm and 1 answer to the final, so make sure to attend lecture or have a friend in lecture). All the information needed is located in the course reader so lectures aren’t necessarily needed although you probably want the answers for the midterm and final. Esdin’s lectures are fairly interesting but a tad repetitive as he goes slowly to ensure comprehension. Take this class if you can because the information is applicable to your life and it is easy
Understanding the diagrams and clicker questions is crucial. Unlike the other classes in the 7 series, I think attending lecture for this class is very helpful for the tests (especially the last three weeks when Launchpad is useless in terms of material, there's almost nothing on there). If you are considering Esdin, don't be discouraged if it is still an 8 a.m. lecture. He's a great professor and actually cares about his students. Also, take advantage of the small extra credit opportunities!
Professor Esdin is such a cutie! Very funny and sweet guy who's very clear in his lectures and explanations. I especially like it when he peppers in his personal anecdotes. One time he said he used whole milk in his coffee, not skim or soy and a girl in the front row gasped. It was hilarious. Professor Esdin posts Midterm and Final Review slides online before the exams and they're SO helpful. That's all u need on the exam and I just study using flashcards. This class is so memorable and useful I still think about the things I learned in class even during the holidays. It also made me more conscious about my health and encourages me to take action on my body. LOVE this class and LOVE the professor. As long as you put in some work, you'll do great :)
Challenging class, but the professor knows his stuff. Attend lecture to get the iClicker points and go to the mandatory discussion, because the tests borrow heavily from those. Everything else you can learn from the book.
I took PhySci 5 with Esdin Fall Quarter 2020. This is an extremely practical and useful course and I recommend everyone take it. Professor Esdin does a good job explaining the content and connecting it to practical steps to improve lifestyle choices. Some of the lectures aren't super organized, but if you are ever unsure the Course Reader covers all the content in greater detail so definitely study that. Grading was very fair, a large portion of the grade is a lifestyle assessment project that is very straightforward to score full points on, and there are points for easy quizzes and discussion participation. Great class!
The class is very fun, just that you have to memorize quite a lot. I pull an all nighter for the finals and get 95% on it despite only a few hours memorizing everything. However, I think it is my second hardest GE, but it is worth it!
This class is great for people who wants to know more about their diet and what measures they could take to improve their health. As someone who has a less than stellar diet, I could say I learned a lot about what I need to watch for in the future. It is a very informative class.
The professor was very nice and considerate. He seems like the type that you could approach, ask questions, and get a very complete and accurate answer. His lectures and very well-paced, but be sure to take complete notes as he doesn't upload notes.
The grading is simple. There are points for showing up to lecture and discussion, so show up to lecture and discussion. There are lab quizzes in discussion that are simple to do, pretty much a certain 100%. There are also open-book CCLE quizzes which also are easy to do if you have a basic familiarity with the topic. There is a project and workbook due near the end of the quarter. Be sure to space your work out appropriately, it would make your life so much easier. The midterms are finals are also pretty simple and memorization based. You could cram, but I feel that spacing the material out made me remembered them better for both the exam and the future, so I definitely recommend that.
