FOR PSYCH 119Y: Dr. Wong is one of the nicest professors I've had, and presents his lecture topics clearly where he can keep your attention for most of the lecture (sometimes can seem really long, ~75 min). His tests are fair, testing on mostly lecture material with corresponding material from the book. He holds office hours regularly after the lecture where you can ask about course material or even just have a nice conversation, and has introduced me to a topic that you probably have not taken at UCLA before. Highly recommend taking him for this class, easy upper div for psychobio!
If you are interested about the study of brain damages and related effects, you will certainly learn a lot in the class. In every lecture, specially the ones after the midterm, you will learn at least something new. You need to attend classes because the professor gives out extra credit randomly in class-- once before and once after the midterm.
If you're taking this course as a GE, I wouldn't recommend it. Course material isn't easy (from a GE perspective), and because there is a single midterm with equal weight as the final (42.5%), every point has significant impact on your grade. However, the course has arguably a free 15% + 3% extra credit, you really need to work for only 85% with a buffer to 82%.
That said, if you want to take this class to learn something, I strongly recommend this class. The professor does want you to learn and the course material is quite intuitive. You won't require the book; you really only need to study the slides to do well. If you sit down to study the book, you'll waste a significant amount of energy, yet, will learn a lot in the material too. It's not worth the money though.
This class was the best. Very straightforward and Professor Wong is really good at making things interesting and easy to understand. Selling the Psychology in Modules 11th edition for $50 or best offer. Text me at **********!!! Really useful for the class.
Selling textbook for cheap! Email if interested *************
Professor Wong is such a great professor! I recommend this class to anyone looking to satisfying a science GE or majoring in this field. He is funny, lectures are very clear, posts all of his slides on ccle.. which is great for those days you have to miss class. Overall great class.
I am selling my textbook for $7 if anyone is interested please email me at *************
Because I put a lot of work into the class, I am selling my media files of the in-class lab tours (including last year's practical), flashcards on Anki (made from these tours in lab, lecture material, online media), and comprehensive study guide for $20 in a package. This was a great benefit to my own studying and took me many hours to create/compile. Fair warning: what is on the lab practical probably varies from year to year, but there's only so much neuroanatomy to test on. If you are interested, please email me at *************
Class is divided into 3 modules worth 33% of your grade each: western immunoblotting with planarian samples, behavioral experiments with planarians (these two modules focus on the same research question—effect of caffeine on planarian habituation), and neuroanatomy + practical. For me, neuroanatomy was the toughest with the sheer amount of information we had to memorize (identifying brain structures, what pathways they are in, what functions they are responsible for etc.) assessed during a lab practical. For western immuno and behavioral modules, the assessments were lab reports which took a long time (10+ pg full manuscript-style reports with intro, methods, results, discussion) but were graded fairly leniently (I got high As on both). Specific to Wong, he is a hard working and nice professor—write down everything he says and study it for an A+
The class was fairly straightforward, although the amount of work was pretty brutal. It's a basic memorization class, and did not really require students to apply concepts to novel situations. If I remember correctly, Prof. Wong gives 3 points of extra credit, and 10% of the final grade is free, so there is no reason not to get an A in the class. The grade breakdown:
Midterm - 45%
Final - 45%
SONA Participation - 10% (you just have to sign up and attend, and you get 10% of the grade!)
All in all, he's a good professor, not great. I think the class is worth taking. Study the lecture slides over and over, because he only tests material from those slides. I am selling the leaf loose version of the textbook 11th edition for the cheapest price you'll find ($55 and negotiable)! Email me at ************* :)
Overall, this was a great class. The professors teaching is very clear, and straightforward and he manages to keep the class engaged. He is also very understanding and reasonable when it comes to student's work load and exams. Studying is obviously a MUST if you want to pass with the best grade possible. Also, as others mentioned he uploads his lecture slides online which is a plus.
I'm currently selling a loose leaf version of the class text book for $75 . If interested, please text at
