Easy class in the summer sessions. Seems much reading but professor provides questions to guide you. Easy midterm and final that you only need to spend a couple of hours to remember the stuff and the questions are basic. Majority of the students get an A. Recommend this class.
Literally the easiest class at ucla. TAKE THIS CLASS. The midterm and final consist of matching, multiple choice, and fill in the blanks. This is an EASY A class. You can do minimum work and be fine. Just memorize things and pay attention in discussion!
Professor Speer's class was by far one of the easiest classes I've ever taken. He puts all of the slides online and gives study guides for the paper, midterm, and final (which is non cumulative). We also had one paper, but he gives you basically free reign on the topic and how you want to go about writing it.
There is weekly reading and questions which can get pretty dense, but it's pretty interesting. It's clear that he's passionate about sociology and clearly explains all concepts during lecture. Participation counts; you have to participate three times during the quarter to get full credit.
Definitely take this class. Professor Speer makes his lectures extremely clear and if you come to class and take notes, you will do well on the exams. The weekly readings can get dense, but are usually pretty interesting.
This is a pretty easy class. Sometimes the homework can get boring or repetitive, but it is still worth doing because the exams are based so heavily off the homework. Even so, the homework is not that bad. Take this class. Trust me. You will have a easy time.
Love professor speer! As others have said, the workload is fair but it is so straightforward that it makes it easy to do the tests, etc.,
a big fat smooch for professor speer. You're doing great mama, love youuuuu
Tip: do the homework, would help you out with the tests so much
Honestly this class isn't an easy A. There are homework assignments every week that are graded based on completion, so thats cool, but the midterm, final, and final paper, are hard. If you actually attend the lectures, listen to him and take notes on everything he says (because even though he posts his slides, he only posts key terms - doesn't go in depth), you'll do well! You kind of have to care about whats going on too, or else it can be really boring. I loved every bit of it though, I took him for soc 102 in the summer too. Try to get Wisam as a TA if you really wanna do good!!! Hes literally the best
To excel in this class you have to be engaged with the material. You want to take notes beyond just want Speer says because he does not post the same slides, only key terms, so its kinda important to go to lecture. If you can get Wisam as a TA, GO FOR IT!! Wisam makes understanding this stuff a piece of cake. I got an A- in the course and I really only studied everything Wisam clarified. There is a list of questions for the exams and you choose a few to answer. Speer is an interesting professor, slightly witty.
A- cause of my final paper mostly. I'm not sure when I took this class, but it was incredibly engaging. This class with Prof Speer is probably a good introduction to upper-division in general. He is really kind and respectful towards his students and makes sure to give time for each slide or any questions that come up. There are weekly assignments, but not only are they graded on completion, but they actually contribute towards the tests (crazy, I know). Now 101 has a lot of info, so don't underestimate the course material.
Everyone always talks about Wisam, I didn't have him as a TA, but honestly just go to Isaac, if you need help.
I'm taking soc 156 with Prof Speer now which is how I ended up here to see if he had any reviews for that class too. I think he taught 147 at one point, but I already took that class over the summer. Anyway, yup.
I LOVED THIS CLASS AND DR. SPEER!! He made the class so fun and engaging. The material was really interesting, and the professor has a great personality so it made lectures fly by. Dr. Speer is super caring and is always willing to help students. He is an amazing lecturer and is super patient. This class is a 10/10.
