Bruv this class SLAPS. No honestly one of the most underrated Life Science GEs a UCLA student can take. The grading scheme was equally divided into 20% for all of the following: Participation, Self-monitoring (I'll explain below), Midterm, Final, Final Paper.

This is a class that teaches you to become a better person, whether more productive, more mindful, more appreciative, the list goes on. Every week Professor Korb gives you these "interventions", and you complete them on your own time and then evaluate how you feel on a Google Form. This constitutes the "self-monitoring" grade. Then, at the end of each week, you write up a 1-page log. At the end of the quarter, you'll have a 6-10 page double-spaced paper which is actually not too hard.

As for the lectures, go to them and do the readings! Now, for non-LS majors, neuroscience may sound difficult but the material is actually quite easy and stripped down so don't worry!

I am selling all my comprehensive notes (with each lecture and reading) for $15. My notes contain bolded keywords and concepts and detailed drawings, and they definitely helped me get an A+. Text me at ********** if you're interested.

I really enjoyed this class and the content. My only complaint is that the discussion sections were pretty useless and did not involve discussing the concepts in class. Most of the discussion sections involved learning how to write a hypothesis or other very easy stuff that we learned how to do in middle school. I would have loved it if it involved actual discussion and everyone sharing their thoughts. The discussion groups were way too big as well but there is probably not much they can do about that. The actual lectures were incredibly interesting and Korb is great.

Such a great class! its an easy A, I was just being a bad student at the time lol. weekly homework consists of readings and then little experiments you do with yourself and then you write up an analysis of it. you learn about all the positive effects of physical and mental exercises and pretty much most of what you learn you can apply to your real life. I recommend this class to everyone! You do not have to be a science person whatsoever. Dr Korb is also hilarious and a great lecturer; we use the book he wrote for the class.

I enjoyed this class with Professor Korb. His lectures are straightforward and recorded. I didn't enjoy going to discussion section, but I did have a very nice TA who was helpful. The tests for this class aren't hard especially with the open notes. Every week you have to submit a log about your intervention for the week. These are easy points. There is also a final paper, but it's all information from your previous weeks' logs so it isn't very hard. I didn't read the actual textbook, and I did just fine going to lecture. I would recommend this class as a nice GE to learn about neuroscience.

Quarter: Spring 2020
Grade: A

I took this class during the 2020 pandemic and it was online.

That being said, Dr. Korb is an excellent lecturer (really engaging and entertaining), and the material of this class is very interesting. I definitely recommend this class to anyone, but you'll definitely get something extra out of it if you're going through a hard time (like I was).

Grading is super fair. Distributed between 20% for participation, midterm, final, a paper, and then weekly logs (basically short papers) you turn in.

My only issues with this class are...

A) The tests seem to be much more difficult and precise than the Prof. lets on the lectures. In the lectures, Dr. Korb will use fun examples to demonstrate neuroscience concepts while some of the questions on the tests were ridiculously confusing and technical compared to the material he presented. I got a 70% on the midterm... I legitimately don't remember the last time I got a grade that low on a test (I take easy classes so its not a flex), but I ended up with an A in the class so its all good (study for the final!!!) However this discrepancy could've been an intentional adjustment due to the class being online.

B) While the workload isn't super serious, it isn't particularly light. Remembering to record your "wellbeing" data on a semi-daily basis (effects participation grade) sounds easy but is super easy to forget. Start slipping up and your grade will hurt. Same goes for the weekly "logs" (usually will have to be about a page and half and well thought out). Also this class requires you to constantly change small aspects of your lifestyle (working out, meditating, writing letters to other people etc.), and while you can BS it and just say you did the interventions in your logs even though you didn't, the papers (and the class) go smoother if you actually take the time to do them.

This class is definitely interesting and worthwhile, and probably one of the easier science GE's. As a North Campus major I'd recommend it for sure.

This class was amazing and I would recommend anybody to take it. The material is engaging and beneficial to your life, and Professor Korb is great. The work load is very manageable but I still felt that I learned a lot from this course and look forward to implementing the knowledge into my daily life.

As a hard stem major, this class was a cakewalk where you don't really have to study or anything and just get an A (tests are open-book, open-note). Assignments are annoying but can finish in maybe 15-30 minutes. He really stresses that you shouldn't be taking this class for a grade and should be using it to better yourself and everything and kind of actively shames you into dropping the class if you're not their to truly take away things from the class? idk it felt a bit too serious in that regard which kind of made me enjoy the class less. Although I did take away a few things from the class, the lectures drag on and on. That being said, in an incredibly stressful quarter taking the time to reflect on myself and meditate, use less social media before bed, and other intevnetions genuinely probably did help my mental health quite a bit and I'll definitely try to continue doing them throughout my life. Also Hui, my TA, was amazing and I genuinely enjoyed coming to her sections to kind of reinforce what we were talking about in class! Would take again for the easiness more than the content.

Outstanding professor, absolutely manageable workload. Interesting class and the best option for those looking to fulfill life science GE. I highly recommend reading his book, it's cheap and helpful. His tests are open note and online, I struggled more on the midterm but got an A on the final. If you know the slides you WILL get an A on the final.

Very okay class. Everything we learned about felt obvious & straight forward. You can pass the class by Control F-ing your way through the powerpoints on the exams.

He's a terrible lecturer but a nice guy. If there's one thing he'll do, it's belabor a point. I could show up to class 20 minutes late and he'd somehow be on the second slide.

Don't choose Imri's discussion - it's unbearable.
