Absolutely loved this class. My favorite GE at UCLA so far. This class teaches skills for well-being and productivity that are applicable to everyone, no matter what major you are. I feel like this class is one of the only classes that I see as having a truly significant positive impact on my life. Professor Korb is funny and gives practical advice backed up by neuroscience. It's a great, evidence-based class. I recommend to all!
Loved this class, would take again. One of the most interesting/helpful classes I have taken at UCLA!
Great GE to take to fulfill science requirements, especially for someone like me who doesn't enjoy science and math. Lectures are clear and straightforward and Professor Korb is passionate about what he is teaching. This class really helped me to understand MENTAL HEALTH which has been huge in my college career so far.
- One of the most practical, useful classes at UCLA
- Straightforward multiple choice midterm and final
- Weekly log assignments can sometimes be a pain
- Textbooks are easy to read (more like self-help books) and have helped me to change the way I deal with my own mental health
Textbooks are not necessary to do well in the class, but I would read them because they give great life tips and advice.
This is one of my favorite G.Es here at UCLA. The material you learn really helps you understand mental health and Dr. Korb teaches you skills you can apply to your very life!!! His exams are harder than he makes it out to be though. He says his exams are very straight forward, however, I would have to disagree. You definitely need to study his lecture slides closely and make sure you understand the neuroscience (like what neurotransmitter/region of the brain does what). Thinking that the exam would be easy, I didn't study too hard for the first midterm and I got a C+. However, this class is very fair and the exam is only worth 20% of your grade. Everything else like participation, final paper, and final exam are weighted into your grade so bombing one exam doesn't mean you can't get an A. I studied much harder on the final (and did well) , participated a lot and did well on final paper so I ended up with an A. Overall, this is a GREAT class and I would highly recommend this class to everyone! It can truly make a difference in your life if you take it seriously enough. Btw, he assigns his own book as the textbook for the class. He only makes you read a portion of it, but the book is so good that I read it all! It is also cheap too (about $12). TAKE THIS CLASS!!! You won't regret it!
Pretty straightforward and easy class about the psychology of personal wellness and your daily routine. The final grade is comprised of (20% each): section participation, midterm, final, final paper, and weekly write-ups of experiments you do.
The experiments involve doing one activity a few days a week (e.g. yoga or meditating) and at the end of the week you write about how it affected you each day. The final paper covers the way that a few of your experiments affected you and the rest of the class, and how this is backed up by scientific research.
Prof Korb posts all of his slides so attendance isn't mandatory, and most of the assigned readings are covered in lecture/section (I didn't buy any of the books). The midterm and final were based on the slides and to a lesser extent the readings, and the final wasn't cumulative. Overall an interesting and low-stress class, I'm glad I took it.
This class is so useful and it doesn't feel life science-y in the traditional sense. There's some technical neuroscience about macroscopic brain regions and a few neurotransmitters but that info gets repeated so many times during the quarter in different contexts that its not hard to know by the final.
This class can be time consuming because there;s weekly interventions. i took it awhile ago so i dont remember all the details, but we had an umbrella topic weekly like "exercise" or "sleep" and within that topic, i think we could choose any intervention we wanted to so long as it related. So for "exercise", we could do "exercise 30 minutes each day for 3 days and don't exercise for 3 days". The interventions started out telling us what to do exactly and then as the weeks go by, you get more leeway to design your own intervnetions, and by about week 7 we got to pick out own umbrella topic and intervention.
It's busy though cuz we had to record everything in an app for everyday of the quarter almost cuz we do the interventions 6/7 days a week for 9-10 weeks. It's a lot but once i put it all on paper, it was easy to see how things like exercise affected my mood or sleep and what impacts what else.
Korb gives some cool lectures too! he tells memorable stories about topics that impact mental health. Just pay attention deeply in lecture and the exams are easy. Class is really useful for life skills. the title pretty much does it justice.
What a great class
Take this class!! Get the Upward Spiral book. Go for lectures cause they're the best part of the class.
Pretty easy and a nice professor. He does ramble in his lectures sometimes which can get a bit boring.
This is the type of class you expect to come into when you enter college. Korb is a very nice guy and right off the bat you can tell that he cares about his students. He isn't just teaching information for you to memorize. He's teaching relatively simple concepts that you can apply to your own life. He is by far my favorite professor I've had so far at UCLA.
