Spring 2024 - Simply put, Rubin is a nice guy who has absolutely no business teaching a lower div ochem course. His expertise seems to lie in his research niche and not much else. It also didn't help that he was incredibly disorganized with his lectures and slides. Oh, and be prepared to receive eight emails a day from him! You will be cleaning your inbox every day.

Rubin is BORING. I'm not one to fall asleep in class, but Rubin was really asking for it. He knows is OChem, but someone needs to breath some life into this man! The tests were similar to previous exams posted on his website, and that was very helpful. Overall I like organic chem a lot, but at points it was hard to keep my enthusiasm up with such a dull prof.

Winter 2023 - Ignore all the old reviews, Rubin is absolutely goated. All of his exams were online, open note, open book, and he often gave us extra time to complete them. The grading scheme is also super forgiving (you literally only need 20% in the class to pass with a C-) and homework is weighted 33% of your grade. I got an A- with only an 81% since the class average was a 60% on the second midterm, which lowered my overall grade a bit. He also gives us super useful slides, summaries, and links that we're allowed to use during the exams. He has great humor and is a super sweet person who truly cares about his students and our success. 100% recommend this class, I would not have scored so high given how little I studied with any other professor. Rubin is amazing.

Dr. Rubin isn't a very good lecturer. He tries to make the class fun and while some jokes are funny, majority are not. I don't even known why i bother going to class. He pretty much reads aloud the textbook. He audio casts which doesn't help because ochem is very visual. The best thing about his class is that his curve is super generous. Pretty much 30% can get A's (includes A-) which is unheard of. His exams look the same from year to year so just do his practice exams and of course read the book.

Fall 2023 - This class is EASYY but overall just alright. The professor is kinda dry but overall still kind and willing to help. You can honestly just read the textbook alone and be more than fine in the class. HW was not too bad but is graded so make sure to double check especially with the ones that have provided answers from the end of the TB. The exams, however, can be tricky. You’ll be given just an IR, for example, but not the molecular formula. BUT!, best thing about the exams are that they’re completely open note as in, I had my iPad notes and laptop for the exam. As for the lab, it’s fine but disorganized at times. The TAs are a great help and getting good results isn’t expected. If anything, sample data is given if your experiment doesn’t work (and a lot of them don’t). The lab reports are really straightforward and doesn’t require a lot of explaining. Literally just analyzing your NMR in bullet points; they’re not graded that harshly + a lot of time is given to complete them especially since we would finish some of our labs in less than the given lab sessions. The grading scale is also crazy; 75% for an A-, 50% is a B- so you’ll literally be fine.
