Given COVID and the department's policies, Prof Takatsuka was as accommodating as she could be. She was very approachable and super nice. Her lectures were just her reading off the slides, but I really like how she added slides to apply what she was teaching to our economy during the time of COVID. That actually really helped me understand the material better.
I'd say the most helpful thing to do to study for the midterms and final is to READ THE TEXTBOOK. It's online and it was free (because of COVID I think) and do MindTap. Sometimes she pulls questions that are answered by the textbook verbatim, so it's important to read the textbook, which was pretty good at explaining concepts.
*** COVID-19 REVIEW ***
Takatsuka did accommodate this class decently well given the transition to online learning. However, her lectures are her reading off of the textbook supplied slides for each chapter, and it is extremely difficult to follow along in my opinion.
Only a handful of students did well on the exam, and I ended up dropping to retake it during Summer Session where I actually saw a difference in quality. Takatsuka took questions from the most challenging part of the exam bank and effectively didn't teach enough to cover the material, so it was extremely challenging. My new professor broke down the material much better. If you are good at self-learning then this class is good for you—if you'd like a more attentive professor then I recommend not doing it through her.
Tests were also monitored using Respondus.
Professor Takatsuka is very sweet, kind, and helpful! However, in an online setting, I really don't think going to lectures or discussion is a good use of your time. The grade is based completely off of your midterm and final, no homework or attendance, so just focus on learning the concepts on your own time and taking really good notes since the tests are open note. Maybe listen to the first few minutes of lecture for any important announcements but otherwise just read the textbook, go over the slides she posts, and DO THE MINDTAP PROBLEMS and the practice tests she posts!! You should honestly just print out the slides to have with you during the test in addition to your notes because they often have useful tidbits or examples she references during the test. Overall a reasonable class & good transition to online learning formats.
Professor Takatsuka is very sweet and cares about her students. Her lectures could be a bit confusing at times (and she did have her fair share of technical difficulties during the online quarter), but the textbook and MindTap problems make up for this shortfall.
She lectured using the textbook slides, but found ways to incorporate examples and real world case studies (such as the COVID-19 economic crisis) into the course. Her lectures were also recorded.
Discussion sections were largely a waste and consisted of going over optional HW assignments. If you have a question on the assignment, I'd recommend going, but otherwise you can skip it.
The class consists of two midterms and a final (all M/C), made open note due to being online. The tests did get progressively harder, but as long as if you review the slides, textbook, and practice materials, you should do fine. She was also very flexible considering everything going on, using three different grading schemes and offering extra credit.
Overall, Prof. Takatsuka is very kind and cares very much for her students. But, she may not be the most clear lecturer, so you will definitely need to study outside of lecture
Professor Takatsuka is super sweet and really cares about her students. Her lectures are basically just reading off the slides with the occasional addition of information here and there. There is no required homework in this class and discussions are completely useless unless you have a specific question about something (I was the only one who showed up for discussion for 8 out of the 10 weeks). The tests were not easy but they were fair and if you studied it isn't hard to get an A or B. Overall, Professor Takatsuka is a really kind teacher who will help you and take the time to make sure you are getting the most out of her class.
I would definitely recommend taking this class with her!
This course only has two midterms and a final. Read and memorize Professor's slides carefully. Then you will be good for exams.
Yuki seems so sweet, but she just read off slides made by the textbook. She didn't explain anything using her own words. Thank god I took this class remote and there were open note tests. The breakdown of grades was 30% midterm 1, 30% midterm 2, 40% final. So much material to cover in such little time.
Horrible. Yuki copies and pastes the slides from the textbook and reads them word for word. She is unable to answer any question a student asks her. Her knowledge of this subject is subpar. The only way to pass her course is to read the textbook and know it like the back of your hand. She asks the most obscure test questions that are not mentioned on "her" slides or in lectures but are mentioned in 1 sentence in the textbook.
The class wasn't bad overall, but it was online because of COVID19 and there were a lot of technical issues. Aside from that, the grading scheme consists of only tests: 30% for each midterm and 40% for final, but she adjusted it into three different grading scheme because of blm, which I thought was accommodating since the department wouldn't allow finals to be cancelled. I thought the tests were pretty straightforward; they were nothing tricky so as long as you study enough you will be fine. There are no homework for the class, so some things I recommend doing are reading the textbook, going to lectures and taking lots of notes, going to discussions if your TA is helpful, and doing the mindtap problems. Also, go to office hours with questions, she's pretty helpful during OH. She even gave 2% extra credit if you do a mindtap assignment near the end of the quarter.
