While the lectures were boring at times, she does a good job at making the material understandable. Much of your grade comes from a group project which can be daunting but it evens out in the end as you write your own paper for the final. Depends on which TA you get for grading but I recommend this class!
I can't compare this to other psych lab classes, but I will say that this was definitely a much easier and more enjoyable class than I thought it would be. Professor Huo has pretty low bruinwalk ratings and most of them seem to stem from taking 135 with her. I took the social psych lab with Professor Huo and it's incredibly clear that she really cares about her students. She always went out of her way to help and she (along with the TA, Mako) was very friendly and approachable. You can really tell that she WANTS you to do well in the class.
Her lectures, while maybe not the most interesting at times, were very clear and informative. I will say that the textbook we used for the class was useless and boring. There was one midterm, one group project, one final paper, and some other small assignments that weren't worth very many points at all. The syllabus made this class seem a lot more daunting than it actually is.
I would definitely recommend taking Psych 136B, or any class, with Professor Huo if you get the chance.
I don't know why Professor Huo got such negative ratings in all of these previous reviews. Maybe she has gotten much better since these last reviews were posted. I have to admit I was a bit apprehensive about taking her class after reading these reviews but I now realize that Bruinwalk is not necessarily a reliable source for Professor reviews. Maybe large class sizes has something to do with it seeing as how these reviews were all about Psych 135, but I felt that my 20 person class very much enjoyed the class as much as I did.
Even though it was an 9am, 2 hour lecture, everyone was attentive and attended class for the most part. Professor Huo was very knowledgable on the subject and was very patient when it came to questions and explanations of specific concepts and topics. Most of all, she gave off the impression that she cared about her students...and not just about issues pertaining to the class. She always encouraged people to come to office hours even if just to talk about whatever you felt like talking about. For the graduating seniors in our class she told us to look for her at graduation and that she looked forward to meeting our families. To me, that shows that she cares and wants to be involved with all her students on a level beyond just schoolwork. Highly recommended if you plan on taking a Psychology Lab.
