I took Nogami sensei for J4 and J5, and while her teaching style stressed me out to no end it was the kind that I needed. Nogami teaches the entire class in Japanese, and it’s a little over an hour of her asking questions and calling on students randomly to respond. You’re expected to be familiar with the grammar and vocabulary before class, and be able to utilize it when speaking. However, she utilizes the vocabulary and grammar you’ve learned up to that point and hearing it used in conversation over and over really helps it stick to memory. It’s complete immersion and terrifying, but insanely helpful. If you know you won’t learn a language unless you’re absolutely forced to, this is the class for you. She assigns all the workbook pages for the chapter at once, but it’s only due every few weeks. The tests are easy to prepare for once you know what you need to study. This class isn’t for everyone and it’s challenging, but if you put in the effort you will be rewarded.
