I took both 31B and 32A with Moschovakis. Having taken Calc BC in high school, 31B wasn't too bad and i got through it with an A, although it wasn't easy at all. As a result, I figured I could survive another quarter with Moschovakis... First midterm for 32A I completely bombed while the average was around 80/100. I did well on the remainder of the class and pulled a B. Basically he has a really think accent which takes a while to get used to, and his handwriting is horrible. My friends and I would sit and stare at certain problems trying to figure out if he wrote an n, r, or even anything in the english or greek alphabet. His lectures are pretty pointless. I went to all of them but never once went back to look at lecture notes. His weekly quizzes are rough. 4-5 problems in 15 minutes is a little ridiculous, especially when the TA doesn't give partial credit. An earlier review said it best: Moschovakis is the kind of guy you want as your grandpa, not your math professor. He's very approachable and always willing to help, but he isn't the best math teacher I've ever had.
His accent is pretty thick and his writing is pretty messy so good luck with that. I went to almost all the lecture and it turned out to be a waste of time. Just learn from the book if you can; it helps you so much more than anything else. Took notes and listened in class but I never looked at the notes that I took. Grading wise he is very fair and generous. Did below average on the 2nd midterm and got a B on the final but ended up with an A. Go figure. Pretty nice guy, willing to talk to you beyond office hours. He likes theory, but only about 10% of each midterm and final is on theory alone. Overall a pretty good professor.
Moschovakis will always be available to help during office hours, and his explainations are better during his office hours compared to during lectures. Be sure to get a seat near the front so you can read his handwriting. The most annoying part of the class are the quizes because the graders do not give any partial credit for the quizes. Worst part is that you only have 15 minutes to complete them, so you have no time to check your answers.
Final Opinion: Not enough time is offered on the quizes, midterms are long for the one hour testing period. The material isn't too hard, but the main problem is that you don't have much time to complete it. Definitely not a bad professor but there should be better options available.
He is kind of hard to understand and his writing is messy too. He's good if you understand what he is saying, but I didn't. For his tests, most of the questions aren't too hard, but he gives you many many problems so most people run out of time. If you are the kind of person who does math very fast, then take him, but if you aren't really fast then don't.
