I thought this class was so easy and the lectures were so simple, but the exams were ridiculous. I ended up with a B- even though I spent hours upon hours studying. I did good in 30A, and on all the practice problems we had for this class so I felt like I put in my best effort. I think a part of the problem is that Jane gave out the same midterm and final (at least the same final as Steve's I think, Im not sure about Jukka) as other professors, yet went into less detail during her lectures. I felt way less prepared, and we were expected to know things that I honestly never remember even seeing in the textbook, in our homework, labs, or lecture, so it felt pretty unfair. I might have just had a bad experience last quarter, but I couldn't wait for this class to be over.
When taking this class I had so much trouble. Especially coming into college as a freshman and all of this is new to me. This professor is difficult to understand and you really have to pay attention in order to get what she is teaching. The homework's are very long and when giving us the midterm there were two questions that she knew she did not teach us and out of 64 points those two questions were worth 30 points combined. Although, she is very sweet and funny at times.
I took this class as a requirement for my major, and it was okay. Professor Shevtsov assigns a lot of homework compared to other professors, but it was fine since I'm used to doing around 15-20 questions for homework. The textbook used in this class is not very clear, so further research is needed to understand how to do questions. I recommend using Professor Garfinkel's online videos about chapters of the textbook. The midterm was really easy because I used the practice midterms to study and know what I am going to be tested on, but when I repeated that studying method for my final, it didn't work, and so I got a much better score on the midterm than final. I have no idea why the practice finals weren't similar to the final, and I think in the future they need to produce practice exams that mimic the questions asked on the actual final. Professor Shevtsov can be hard to understand at times, but it's not impossible, just make sure you're paying attention. To do well in this class I recommend to use practice tests but also practice questions from lectures and from the textbook to make sure you understand the process of getting the answer. I think the class is fine, so if you have to take it, do it, and just stay on top of everything and you should get a B or above, almost guaranteed.
