This class is very simple. Sharvit goes over powerpoints every lecture and the slides are posted every time. You can afford to miss 2 discussions and there is very little homework load. The midterm and non cumulative final are very straight forward based on the homeworks and the slides. Take this class to learn some interesting things and get an A if you put a little work in.
I believe that the class was appropriate for an introductory linguistics course as well as for a GE. The class did seem a little tedious at times, especially before the midterm, but after that it became much more interesting, with my two favorite lectures/topics being syllables and animal communication. However, one downside of the class was the strange wording of the final; some questions were difficult to understand in terms of what they were trying to ask. Overall, this class follows a very clear structure and is not too difficult to follow in terms of content.
If you're looking for an easy (and fairly interesting) GE, look no further! I highly recommend Ling 1 with Sharvit. Homework was really light (only a few short assignments throughout the quarter), and you got full points on the quizzes in discussion as long as you showed up. Readings were really minimal too, and the midterm and final were both multiple choice and very straightforward.
