This was definitely an easy class! If you are looking for an easy GE, look no further! Although the content after the midterm gets a little bit harder, as long as you pay attention in lecture (which I did not do), you will be fine. A lot of people skipped lecture cause she would post the slides online and they were very detailed and easy to understand/follow. There would be weekly homeworks which were easy enough to do and there would also be weekly quizzes in discussion which were based on completion and a form of attendance. The professor was very nice and always made sure to answer questions! I definitely recommend you take this class!
Up until the final this was the easiest class ever. Read the other reviews for logistics but it was such a light workload, midterm was super easy, and so were the weekly “quizzes.” I want to say that the professor is extremely rude and does not like answering questions. She is very blunt and as the quarter progressed she only got worse. Then there is the issue of the final. Someone posted that we didn’t do well because of overconfidence and not studying which can’t be further from the truth. I studied and got a B- which isn’t terrible but compared to the difficulty of this class I was really upset. Also, I had a literal A+ on every assignment in this class including the midterm and still ended with an A- after getting a B- on the final. It’s complete B.S. I regret taking this as a GE
Honestly, probably the easiest class I will ever take at UCLA. The material was very interesting, which made it better to attend lecture and section. The midterm and final were both multiple choice, with very simple questions. She assigned short homework responses every week, which were easy too. There was a quiz in section every week, but all you had to do was show up and take it to pass since they were P/NP. She also assigned students to take part in a psychological study and right an essay about it, which was also relatively easy. All in all, take this class with Sharvit if you can. It'll save your life.
Ling 1 is probably one of the easiest classes I've ever taken at UCLA. The material is incredibly easy and most of the content could probably be derived with a little common sense. There are six homework assignments, one of which is to participate in a human study, and they are all pretty easy and not at all time-consuming. The midterm and final were both multiple choice and if you didn't do well on the midterm, you had the option to take an EC section of the final that could replace a bad midterm score. The questions on exams are very straightforward and follow the exact format as lecture examples. Sharvit was so patient during lecture and I honestly felt bad that she constantly had to repeat herself for students who clearly weren't paying attention. Overall, it's a SUPER easy class and I would 100% recommend it as a GE.
This is not an easy GE!!! I would not recommend taking this class unless you are very interested in linguistics. I had zero interest in the subject which made the class extremely boring to me. The final was very difficult.
I think that this class has interesting material, but I personally found that the lectures were dry and tedious to understand. The grading scheme with the homework and essays are easy enough, but I don't feel as if I learned that much during the class.
Do not take this Professor. She has over 80 lecture slides that are of no use. The TAs say that if you plan on taking upper ling courses that this class does not teach you. You’re better off learning on YouTube or from a textbook. The slides she has are contradictory. When I asked the TAs what I should be following, I simply got an I don’t know response.
The homework is straightforward but the TA I had docked points off for small mistakes while other TAs gave full credit. When I brought this to the attention of the professor she said to email my TA. The issue was not resolved with the TA and that’s why I reached out to the professor…
Later on in class I heard the professor tell my TA to just give me an extra point and call it a day.
The exams are also nonexistent until the day of the exam. When asked what we should study she laughed and said she doesn’t know because the exam doesn’t exist yet. There’s no communication between the TAs and the professor. She says that the TAs will be reviewing material during discussion and they wouldn’t be. You would just sign in and answer the question on the board.
Any time I’d ask her a question she would address it in class instead of just replying with a simple yes or no through email. This class was honestly a waste of time. The class is also not recorded. I would attend every single lecture and every single one she would walk up to the screen, talk for one minute and go back to the podium, wait for 5 minutes, and move on to the next slide. She did this for all 80ish slides. I wish another professor was available during the fall quarter when I took her class.
I had a question about how my final was graded and instead of getting a response she sent out an email to all the students stating that she posted the final grades and to reach out to her during the next quarter. I mean… is it that hard to answer a question?
Again, she does not communicate, the TAs are just as lost as the professor, and nobody knows what’s going on in the class.
