I took Comm 122 in Winter 2009
Here's the rundown
Professor:
Kelly is like your favorite old grandpa who totters around and gives you candy. He is sweet, harmless, and loves everyone. He absolutely hates grades, which he will tell you himself. He believes in learning for the sake of learning. Kelly can be boring at times, but its all really dependent on what he is lecturing about. He really wants you to get an A, and is very nervous on test days because he worries his classes won't do well.
Lecture:
GO TO LECTURE for this class. If you go to lecture, (and TAKE NOTES) you won't have to read a thing. Kelly goes over everything in the reader bit by bit. He explains all of the concepts, and it is much easier to understand him than the readings. His lectures are also very interesting because Kelly loves to incorporate information about current day events. Note to conservatives: Kelly is strongly left-wing liberalist
Grading:
Two test and one paper.
Both tests are 30 question multiple choice. If you know the readings, they are a piece of cake. I finished the midterm in 20 minutes, the final in 30. Got 28/30 and 29/30 respectively. Almost everyone gets a good grade. The essay is also graded easy but it is not a one-night effort kind of thing. Give yourself a few days to write it.
Kelly was seriously fine. A lot of people think he's boring but if you listen to what he's saying and did the readings (COUGH) he has great insight and some funny jokes (which are mostly funny since they're coming from him) to boost. Do the readings, they're really interesting and review the lecture notes and you're golden. Knowing authors is KEY for the first half, but it wasn't so crucial for the second. One 5 page paper which is generously graded (40/40 here) and believe me it wasn't my most inspiring work of art. Multiple choice exams for the midterm and final, not too shabby (27/30 for both here) all which added up to a solid A. If you're between a Steen class and a Kelly class, I vote Kelly. 5 page paper versus 18 page research project? No thanks.
Class based on a midterm, paper, and final worth 30, 40 and 30 percent of your grade, respectively. The midterm & final were ridiculously easy - almost everyone in my class got an A. Same on the paper. I could have gotten a D on the final and still get an A- in the class.
Midterm & final are both multiple choice. Maybe Kelly got a lot easier because I did not find them tricky at all... quite the contrary. I thought he wanted us to circle the answer because they were SO obvious...
The paper he graded pretty easily I think since almost everyone got an A on that too.
Read the 500-page course reader because it is very interesting material. Lectures got boring sometimes and I fell asleep more than I should have in the second half. Don't fall asleep.
Concepts were pretty easy if you have any grasp of current affairs. KNOWWWW the names of authors and their related concepts.
Really easy class but I learned a LOTTTTT in terms of interpersonal and intercultural communication. Very rewarding, I think all political leaders should be required to take this class coughsBUSHcoughs.
I took Professor Kelly's Comm 122 class. The class material was interesting but the lectures did get boring at times. It is important to go to all the lectures and take very detailed notes if you don't plan on reading the course reader (which is 500 pages long!) You have to know the material veryyy well for the exams. Both the midterm and the final are 30 question multiple choice tests that are tricky and confusing. There is also a paper that is 40 percent of your grade, but he never really talks about it in class. You should take this class if you plan on working hard for a good grade. If you're going to slack off and either not go to lecture or not do the reading, then I would suggest to take another class!!!
