I've taken Comm 100 and Comm 115 with Professor Kelly. Yes, his lectures are a tad boring, but the readings (which you don't really even have to do if you go to class and pay attention) are short and easy to understand. You even get to watch some scenes from movies as a part of lecture. The structure of 50-minute classes, 3 days a week makes it so that there's not a lot of material each lecture so it's pretty easy to catch up on. His material is very easy and relatable, and the paper is easy, and if you go to his office hours, you can ask him anything about the materials and he'll have a great response. He's also very available, usually 3 times a week in between his 2 classes.
The midterm and final are both 30 multiple choice questions that are VERY straightforward. If you go to lecture and pay attention, you'll breeze through them within 30 minutes (both the midterm AND final).

Overall, he may come off as a bit boring, but his classes are definitely worth taking because his material is interesting and relevant, and the grading is easy.

He is one SASSY professor.

In regards to exams....

Kelly: "DON'T SIT IN THE FRONT SEATS! THEY ARE RESERVED FOR THE LATE STUDENTS!!"

Late student: "Can I sit here" (points to a back seat)

Kelly: "I guess... BUT YOU WILL MESS UP THE SYSTEM - WHATEVER!"

I live for these moments.

I found it helpful to go to his lectures and take notes, but I never reviewed my notes before the midterms or the final. I did my readings from the book the weekend before each of the 2 midterms and right before the final. This helped me remember the material. There is a 5-page paper that is due, but it is a personal perspective paper, so not bad. I got an A- in the class. Good luck.

Just READ the book!!! Go through all his assigned readings, take notes and review them before tests and you will be just fine. He practically takes everything line by line from the readings at times. His lectures are interesting if you are into such stuff and very close to the readings assigned but since he explains it in his own words, exam questions can look more difficult than they actually are as those are taken from the book. So again, READ the book!!

I took Comm 115 in Winter 2009

I liked Comm 122 with Kelly a lot, you can read my review below. He is obviously intelligent and interesting. But Comm 115 was a drag. It was far too early and the subject matter too boring.

In this class you can choose one of two options: attend lecture, or do readings. The readings from the assigned book are ridiculously easy to comprehend, but if you are too lazy to read you can go to lecture and he will go over every single one. All you need to score high on the tests, is info from the book.

Grading:
Two tests, 30 m/c, easiest tests you will ever take at UCLA.
Essays, not in your typical essay format but very informal, each take about 30 minutes to write. Complete joke.
EVERYONE does well in this class. If you want a GPA booster, this is it.

I took CS 100 and CS 115 with Kelly, and DEFINITELY recommend you take some of his other interpersonal courses besides CS 100. I remember CS 100 was a challenge in staying awake - very dry and all theory, and memorization-based tests. CS 115 was infinitely better - I even looked forward to going to class. It isn't hard, he shows movie clips almost every week, and he gets the class involved in the lectures. Besides MC midterm and final (30 questions each), there are three easy experience papers that help boost your grade. Even though all his courses are MWF lectures, loved Kelly and would totally recommend you take him for easy and interesting interpersonal CS classes.

His lectures are simply a repeat of the reading. If you do the reading you should be fine. He does show a few film clips though. His class is not that difficult, three experience papers, two 30 question mcq exams, all adding up to 100% of your grade. But don't expect him to round up a grade if you're on the border. I ended up with a 92.5% and he refused to round that up to an A. Also, he doesn't grade any of the written material himself.

Professor Kelly is one of my favorite professors here at UCLA. He is really concerned about student learning and he makes lectures interesting. I took his class for one of my allied field requirements, but I am planning on taking him again.

The basics: He's a very nice, shy guy, you get a midterm, book critique/5 page paper and final.

The readings for the class are pretty short and easy. He goes over all the readings in class so theres rarely and new material in his lectures. Tries to get the class to particpate in lectures, boring, same material beaten at over and over again.

Take the classif you have to or need a filler class with relatively light reading. Do not take the class if you are interested in communications and actually are hoping to learn a lot.
