Good riddance....

He retired in the 2014 spring quarter, and I am his last group of student. He is okay on teaching. Some question may tricky but overall is okay and TA is so nice.

I've taken three courses with Kelly. I loved the ones about cultural factors in interpersonal communication and dyadic comm. I thought he was a decent professor my junior year of college, but my opinion of him completely changed after taking com100. That was the worst class I have taken in comm. Not the hardest, but the worst. Not only were lectures boring, but I can't fathom how someone with terrible communication skills can be a professor in communications. I feel bad commenting negatively on Professor Kelly when I had such a great experience with him in previous classes, but he honestly makes me feel like I can't even approach him.

His lecture is extraordinarily boring!! I always sit in the front since it makes me stay awake.
It is helpful to go to lecutres, although he is simply repeating the reading.
Honestly, the multiple choice exams are not that hard, just make sure you go through the study guide and know the theories in it, then you will be fine

I took Kelly for comm 100 and 115. He was overall a much better and more approachable professor in comm 115 than in 100. My overall image of him was altered of him after taking comm 115. Comm 100 was more tricky and I suggest to anyone who has taken comm 100 to take 115 or another interpersonal class with Kelly.

So I don't really understand why people think this class is a weeder class. The readings are very manageable and not hard to understand. The essay prompts are interesting. The multiple choice questions are very straightforward if you pay close attention to the readings. I never, ever went to class because Kelly's lectures come straight from the reading. I've probably only ever gone to class to take the midterm and final, and the rest of the time I just slept in. This is probably the only class I've ever taken at UCLA where I missed 90% of the lectures and still received an A as a final grade.

What a delightful class! I love Kelly's teaching. He portrays a calm delivery for lecture and he's very organized, since he writes down all the points he's going to talk about on the board chronologically. The subjects he covers are very interesting, too. Some of the reading can seem extraneous or a bit boring, but that's where lecture comes in handy. Kelly does a brilliant job explaining the reading. He shows plenty of movie clips, too, to supplement the topics he covers.

The class is based off of a midterm and final (worth 30% each) and a paper worth 40%. The midterm is based on 30 multiple choice Qs, along with 3 take-home essays. The multiple-choice questions are pretty easy, except for a few that seem tricky but that's where you just gotta read the questions carefully. They're pretty conceptual, which helps me learn better, rather than answering basic factual questions. The final is based on 30 multiple choice Q, 3 short-answered questions (He gives about 6 questions. You have to choose 3, and write no more than 1 page on each question), and one in-class essay (Choose between two questions, 3-pages max). So you'll need a blue book for the final. The essay questions are fairly easy and have been covered in class, so they shouldn't come as a surprise.

The paper is fairly easy, too. It's only 5-pages and you get to choose a topic from 3 broad topics. It's really free the way you decide to write it (write from personal experience, through research) so you can write how you feel comfortable.

Overall, I really enjoyed his class. The professor is definitely concerned with student learning. He likes to post supplemental reading for any student who's interested in learning more about a particular topic. And he has a great light-humor. He tries to be entertaining with personal stories he shares, and it's pretty delightful. He likes to interact with students in class, which helps to get different views across lecture. I felt like I learned most from this class than my other 3 classes I took this quarter. I absolutely recommend Kelly, and I'm not even a Communications major. But I loved his class.

I LOVE professor Kelly... ya, 100 isn't the easiest com class at UCLA.. but are any of the core classes really that easy? He gives you the information you need to know, and as long as you study, it's very possible to get an A. I think people naturally dislike this class A. bc it's early mwf, B. it's required and C. you actually have to work a little to do well on the exams (since they're only out of 30, if you miss more than 3 you're in the B range). In reality, it's not bad at all!!! you can tell he really loves the material that he's teaching and tries to use interesting readings/articles to teach the different com theories. He doesn't make anything IMPOSSIBLE, as long as you put in a little effort and go to class and discussion, an A is very easy to achieve. I can't speak for the other TA, but mine was very helpful and concerned with making sure his students did the best they could. Overall, I'd take Kelly again any day over a few of the other com professors (cough, suman, cough). Highly recommended if you don't mind actually doing some work for a good grade (isn't that why we're all in college, anyway?)
