Good professor, very well known in his field of study. In our class we had a mid-term and a final each worth about 33% of the total grade. We also had a short 2 page single space paper with 33% of the grade and 1% for attendance. We had a very fair amount of reading to do. Although I thought that the mid-term and the final were difficult (especially the final) it seemed that his grading criteria was very fair. Most of the questions on the exams were from the notes. However, the questions on the exams especially the final exam was very strange in a sense that it was irrelevant with the actual theme of the class, they were just useless facts. On the mid-term it was much more relevant and it seemed they were directly from the notes. Again the course is not easy, but his grading criteria very well make up for that. I received a B on the mid-term and an A- on the paper. I thought I did terrible on the final. However, to my surprise I received an A in the course. I do have to say the course was interesting and I actually learned a lot from the course readings and the professor’s lectures. I would recommend this course for two reasons 1) Interesting and you will learn a lot and 2) It will be a fairly easy A if you put in the work.
The subject matter is interesting, but I found the lectures tedious. His lectures are dry, which makes them boring, and difficult to take notes on for a more visual learner like myself.
I also went into the class thinking to focus more on the themes of the class. This is good except that he likes numbers and tables as well. I was pretty unprepared to recall facts and data on the midterm. The final also required the knowledge of facts and tables.
I best recommendations for this class is to attend lectures because he gives a lot of information there that you will need for the graded materials and go to office hours concerning your papers. He can be a tough critic with papers.
If you get a chance, take this course. You might be surprised what you learn about yourself and the students around you. You'll get to write your own 4 page autobiography for one of the assignments, and if you haven't done this before, it's a great experience. Professor Clark's lectures are very easy to follow and great for note taking. He draws a lot of graphs, and be prepared to reproduce at least one of them on the midterm if you want to get the maximum amount of points on you essay question. His reading assignments are also very manageable, and inexpensive...I think the reader was $30 or $40. I'm surpised people thought he was boring, 'cause he was really animated in our class.
