Course: Honors Collegium
The last evaluation has impelled me to make an evaluation of Prof TenHouten. It is true that some students will not like TenHouten. But I don't understand where all the hate is coming from. Sure he talks about his theories and finds his studies important. What professor doesn't? By the way, I remember the exact person that wrote the comment below... Let's just say if you like arguing with the professor every 5 minutes and nitpicking every single mistake/misunderstanding and love rolling your eyes then you will probably have the same experience. It is ok to be smart. And it is possible that you are smarter than a professor at UCLA. But it isn't ok to be arrogant about it. Making comments in class and pretending you are some sort of genius is annoying.
The class is easy. Take it. You might like the subject or you might not. Just try to be open minded. Either way, it's an easy A. The only assignment is a research paper and he gives you a lot of time. There is a midterm/final exam. Just take decent notes and review before class. But like all Honors courses, an A is easy to get with minimal effort.
I took Tenhouten for Honors Collegium (Not Sociology) 171, Rationality and Emotion. First of all, let me say that I got an A in his class, so none of my comments here are motivated by anger about the grade I got.
That said, Warren D. Tenhouten is, hands down, the worst professor I have ever had. Certainly, his class is fairly easy. You don't really need to do the reading, and you probably don't even have to pay attention much in class. The biggest bit of work you'll have to do is a research paper.
Unfortunately, easiness is about the only good thing that can be said for his class. Tenhouten spends a great deal of time self-aggrandizing. He'll go on and on about how great his theory his, and how much he's contributed to the field. When he's not telling you how amazing he is, he's making bad sexist jokes or, worst of all, giving you false information and theories that are full of logical holes.
For example, Tenhouten told us in class that the Stoics were philosophers who believed in withdrawing from social and political life, and that their founder was Diogenes. Political involvement, in case you don't know, was a cornerstone of stoic philosophy, and one of the most famous Stoics was Marcus Aurelius - an emperor. This wasn't just a slip of the tongue either, as he was corrected on it and continued to insist that the Stoics believed in withdrawing from social and political life.
And that's just one example. This kind of thing happened every day. Tenhouten thinks he's a polyglot, when in reality he's only capable at sociology, and even there his ideas are full of holes.
