Dr. Espino is such a good lecturer! I took this class on a whim for UD credit, but I was engaged throughout the quarter. Lecture was super insightful and covered a lot of different topics. If you do the readings, you'll be set pretty much. Discussion sections are designed to pretty much just be TA help on the writing assignments throughout the quarter. Lena (the TA for this class) was an angel and so helpful during discussion! The workload was super manageable and I'm really glad that I took this class.
Virginia is funny, engaging and helpful. There is no need to buy any textbooks since the readings are online. Midterm and final are easy. However, she sometimes talks fast and moves to the next slide really quickly (if you ask her politely she will go back to the slide).
This is my first Chican@ studies class at UCLA and it was my last quarter. I honestly loved Espino. I have an interesting perspective of being the only white man in a class focused almost solely on discrimination against and struggles of a population that I, by birth, do not identify with. I have had classes in other departments (the labor and workplace studies) that make it more about attacking white people that teaching. Espino's course didn't do that in the least but still managed to tackle the same subjects, and more. That made this class that much more enlightening. I learned so much about the culture and have grown to respect it even more than I did prior. Espino is an expert on the subject and brings a unique twist to the course, filtering it largely through the lens of Chicanas. 100/100 should take.
The class consists of three short papers along the way. In addition, you have a research paper that is short and you do assignments along the way that builds to it. Easy class if you do the work. Received an A+ and learned a lot.
Espino means well, you can tell she is a sincere professor who cares about the subject and about engaging students. The only problem is her lectures are very slide heavy and I hate to say it, but boring. You can tell the class is falling asleep. The readings were interesting and I got a good grade, but you have to juggle weekly responses, participation grades, a paper, final, and midterm. You cant skip her lectures, so take the class if you want to learn about Chicana scholars or how the practice of historiography works. In these two areas I did learn alot, but it was a struggle to stay engaged during classes.
Professor Espino is an amazing professor! She is very clear throughout her lectures and the readings are very simple and easy to understand. She offers several opportunities for extra credit and quickly responds to all emails. Honestly this class is an easy A if you show up and do the work. We had 3 short essays each 3-4 pages long (easy if you've done the readings) and a final which was a 6 page research paper which we worked on throughout the quarter. I highly recommend this class and professor she is super sweet and just wants to make sure that her students learn
I highly recommend this class professor is very caring and considerate.
Professor Espino is a great lecturer and I wished she would become a professor. The course I took was on Chicana Historiography and I would highly recommend taking this course if you even have a slight interest in what Chicana/o studies is. While it may seem a bit overwhelming with the assignments due every week if you give yourself some time it pays off. Since I took this online I cannot speak for the in-person experience but I bet it would be similar but she is very accommodating towards students and is willing to help if you show up to her office hours. The final was to write a historiography paper but you have plenty of time to write it and the midterm is creating an outline for your paper so you get to start on it early.
