The professor is great. Most of the grading is done my your TA though. I took this class Spring 2014.

I still have the course reader for the class. Email me at: ************* if interested in a reduced price.

You can call it an "easy course" because there is no midterm or final, but this class is by no means an easy A. You will find lectures and discussion sections pointless because they are so unstructured and irrelevant. The readings will be pointless because there are no exams. Everything that can be learned from this entire course can be learned through simple research online or through simply having a conversation with a member of surrounding Latin@ communities. Don't waste your time on this course I can assure you that you will be left with boredom and regret. Do something more exciting like actually going out and talking to some Latin@s and discovering these issues through your own experience. Don't waste your time on the course, trust me, don't do it, don't do it.

I had Prof. Ortiz for my freshman cluster so it was cool to get to experience an upper div with her. This was probably the easiest class I've had at UCLA--there's no midterm or final, just a 3-page paper and an 8-page paper (based on an interview of a Latino(a) person over age 50 you get to choose). Prof. Ortiz is very concerned about students, super approachable, & very passionate about Latino(a) issues.

If you've already taken Chicano(a) Studies classes, a lot of the information might be repetitive since a lot of her lecture topics are very general but for me, it was a very enlightening, inspiring class--one of the best Soc classes I've taken.

Super easy class. Lectures were boring and pointless since there are no tests or quizzes, so I rarely ever went.
The grading consists of:
30% Social Location paper - 3 pages max about your personal social location.
50% Interview assignment - You must interview a Latino 50 years or older and write a paper about their experiences while integrating course readings and topics. Broken up into three parts: 10% for your proposal, 10% for your transcript of the interview and 30% for the final paper.
20% Section

So if you want a easy, not time consuming upper div sociology class this is a good choice! You'll definitely get an A if you do well on the two papers and go to section.
