Profesora West is AWESOME! If you have any doubt about taking a class with her, TAKE IT. She reminded me how useful and practical some styles of learning are, and I learned so much! Some teachers say students need to have super hard tests and tons of homework to learn, and that is NOT what professora West believes. She gives homework every day, which is applicable and helpful review. The quizzes are fair (easy) and the essays are very doable. Favorite teacher at UCLA so far. Hands down. LOVE HER
Spanish 25 was my first college Spanish class and I absolutely loved it! She is an amazing professor and clearly loves her subject and her students- she literally runs around the class with enthusiasm. There is homework every day but it's pretty easy (reading an excerpt of a novel/ essay and analyzing it/ answering questions about it), and her tests are easy-peasy. There are three in-class essays, but you turn in an outline that she lets you use during it. You're also allowed a dictionary. The final is a presentation and a six-page essay, and they're really easy. She is not a native speaker so there's no problem deciphering an accent. I love Profesora West!
She has a personality that can be either really obnoxious or really endearing, depending on the person, but she's fun and very energetic. Compositions are graded very easily, and the midterm and final were super easy. I enjoyed this class a lot and found it easy to succeed in it.
i really liked her, but her enthusiasm for the subject can be scary. she is a great teacher, who really cares about her students. she does have an accent, but it is easy to understand her, she is open to making appointments outside of office hours. the most important part of your grade will be the 3 essays she assigns (30%), so make sure to do well on those. the midterm is really easy, just do all the hw and memorize the key terms that she assigns. overall, if you just pay attention, you should do fine. one complaint that i do have about her is that the way she grades is not even. if she feels/senses that your spanish is really good, she will place more importance on the content than the grammar. still, i highly recommend her.
Honestly, I went into this class really excited because everyone on BruinWalk raved about West so much. Maybe my hopes were too high, but I was greatly disappointed. Her accent is terrible. She sounds like a high pitched hyena from California trying to speak Spanish. She seems like a nice person, but I had to drop the class after the first week, because I couldn't stand her. I don't mean this as a big bashing of West, but rather a warning that she's not everyone's cup of tea. I'm sure she will work for you if you're still in the classroom spanish phase of your life, but if you speak and understand spanish comfortably, West will make you feel like you're in middle school or something.
Take her class if you want an easy professor and don't mind someone with a bad accent and high pitched voice who makes class seem very rushed and doesn't seem to listen to what anyone is saying.
Don't take her class if you want an interesting professor who speaks well, makes class time comfortable and useful, and truly listens to her students. Maybe she helps students on essays as other reviewers have said, but she seems really rushed and distracted during class time. It's as if while you're talking, she's just waiting for you to finish so that she can get back to talking in her bad accent.
I would not recommend Professor West, but go on the first day and maybe you'll love her, as some other students seem to.
She was an amazing teacher! She is very energetic, fun and knowledgeable. Do her homework and study for the exams and you'll be fine. If you have questions she is always willing to help you and she even brought me extra material that covered my question. She was great, I highly recommend her.
