Spanish 44
The class is very easy. I got a 96% even though I didn't do like two readings. The selections of readings are very good.
The only complaint I have is the course title. Its History of Latin America. But it should be Called
History through Literature of Latin America with great emphasis in Chile (The professor is from Chile).
I took Span 44 with Cortinez as a GE class and I really recommend you take this class.
She is a very passionate lecturer and gives you only the best of the best selections to read. Some of them are more interesting than others and if you pay attention in lecture you should be fine if you just skim the readings.
The tests are not meant to trick you but only to test your general understanding of the material. She is not super specific about dates unless she tells you it is an important date to remember. Great class to take even if you have no previous knowledge on this topic.
Lecture and section is mandatory and part of your grade. You are also given 3 unannounced quizzes but the TAs will usually give hints as to when they could occur.
Overall great class !
*Course is now called Span 44*
If you can take any course with Dr. Cortinez, TAKE IT! You will not regret it!
I took Span 44 with her as a GE and it ended up being my favorite class all quarter. Lecture is NEVER dull, as Cortinez's passionate, energetic demeanor makes a two hour class perfectly manageable.
Tests and quizzes are based off of both assigned readings and the historical background Cortinez would cover in lectures. Provided you so much as skim the material, you should do well on the tests.
Tests themselves, full of questions that test your general understanding of the material and not on super specific dates and whatnot.
Loved the class. Loved, loved, LOVED the class
