Segal is the best econ professor I've had at UCLA hands down. Unlike the others, he keeps his lectures interesting and understandable, while always concerned about his students' learning. You will leave each lecture thinking about what he's said, and this will make you want to attend the next one. Those of you who are lucky enough to get this professor will not regret it.
since he's visiting im not sure if he'll be teaching again, but here it is:
he seems to know what he's talking about and his lectures are pretty thorough, as he hates wasting time. be ready for 1 hour and 15 minutes of intense econ. he hates wasting time so much that during one lecture, he yelled at all the students coming in late because they were "distracting"
his tests are a bit tricky so you have to understand the concepts pretty well. and for the calculation problems, just go to TA sessions and do practice problems in the textbook or the examples that the prof or TA gives you.
he doesn't have a distribution for grading, but rather he gives a few points for everybody (like 86 would be lowest A- instead of 90) so it's not easy, but if you studied, not that hard to pull off an A- or even an A
He's very good at explaining the econ material. He comes to class with no lecture notes, or any notes that aid his lecture..i guess he just makes up the material as he goes along and does a GREAT job doing it. He knows exactly what he's talking about and always stops to ask the class if we're lost. compared to other econ professors, i would say Segal is way easier, but that does not mean you don't learn as much. This guy gives fair exams and covers all the necessary material unlike other UCLA econ professors who don't know how to give a lecture and always finding themselves diverting from the syllabus schedule. I defintely recommend Segal.
