Fall 2023 - I cannot put into words just how much I loved this class. It truly changed my perspective on education and made me recognize how people can be profiled throughout their academic experience. I learned so much from this class that I will forever remember. Professor Howard was an amazing teacher, and he will always be considered one of the best professors I’ve ever had. He is so nice, welcoming, and clearly passionate about what he does. I would take any course taught by Professor Howard. This class was emotional, eye-opening, fun, and incredibly engaging. I always enjoyed going to class — in fact, I even looked forward to it. My TA made the class even better. I am so glad I took this class and genuinely will recommend it to anyone at UCLA. Here’s the grading breakdown: GQR: 20% of your grade. There are 4 GQR’s, but only 3 are mandatory. The fourth one is optional, but is recommended if your grade in the class is low. GQR’s are one page long, single spaced, and in APA format. 2 quotes from weekly readings are required. We are allowed to redo one GQR for a higher grade. Each GQR is out of 5 points. MIDTERM: 30% of your grade. An essay based on YOUR schooling experience with race, class, and gender. 5 pages long, APA format, double spaced, 5 required in-class sources. The midterm paper is 30 points total. FINAL: 40% of your grade. A research paper based on an education issue that has been discussed during the class. You can either write this paper alone or with one other person. If you write this paper alone, you are required to write 6-8 pages. If you choose to do a co-authored paper, the requirement is 8-10 pages. The topic of your research paper has to be approved by your TA. APA format, 5 in-class sources, 2 outside sources, double spaced. The final research paper is 40 points total. ATTENDANCE/PARTICIPATION: 10% of your grade. Attendance is taken only in the discussion sections by your TA. You are allowed to have one non-excused absence from discussion without it affecting your grade. More than one unexcused absence will affect your grade. Attendance/Participation is 10 points total. The grading in this class is incredibly fair. This is not a class that you will get bored in. You might even consider taking more education classes or minoring in education afterwards. This is the only undergraduate course Howard teaches. If you are hesitating on enrolling in this class, just enroll in it. You will be thankful that you did.

Winter 2021 - Do yourself a favor and take this course with Professor Howard! He is beyond one of the most caring, respectful, and compassionate professors I have had at my time at UCLA. He's always there to listen to students and invites all to his office hours to discuss the course further or just to chat about life. My TA was Destiny, and she was a great addition to the course! The course consisted of 3 GQR's--short one-page, single-spaced responses to the readings due every two weeks--a midterm that was 5-6 pages double, spaced that involved incorporating the readings and connecting them to your own school experience and how your race, class, and gender all played a role, and lastly, a final. The final was a research paper of 6-8 pages double-spaced with a topic and research question of your choice. I would recommend this course to anyone who needs a requirement for the education studies minor or education major--even those who need a GE would enjoy this course. This course has changed the way I think about my schooling experience and the others around me. It was a pleasure to have Professor Howard during such an unprecedented time of COVID.
