I loved 170E with Professor Tyler – he was a really good teacher, taught a lot, and was really helpful during office hours. There's a good amount of homework, but since we were virtual the midterms and final weren't bad. Class seems to be one of the easier math classes, but also one that's pretty interesting as well, and Tyler is a great teacher for this class.

Does not provide solutions to HW after they were turned in and his TAs graded them after quizzes/exams had passed, so i was unsure if I was doing it correctly. I will say that the HW is similar to quizzes which sounds good but like i said, I was always unsure if what I was doing was correct on the HW since there was no solution manual and therefore I often applied incorrect methods on the quizzes which could've been avoided with a solution manual. He also grades on correctness to add to it. He can be the best professor in the world but this part of his teaching method kills it for me. Other than that, he seems like a nice dude and has organized lectures and all but the material is harder than it should be had he just provided solutions for HW like every other professor ever. would not take again even if he is the highest rated at UCLA for math for this sole reason.

Hard content, need to watch the lecture really carefully and take note actively. The exams are VERY difficult and tight.

Class moves too fast in general. Lectures are good and informative but complexity is too low in comparison to homework and exams. Homework and exams take much longer than anticipated; exams are not possible to finish fully in allotted time. Does not release solutions to homework after due date which does not make sense / I do not see the point of such action and takes away from our learning and progress. Overall do not recommend if you are trying to have a good / semi-not-stressful time taking this class because it was a stressor.

I've had Professor Arant for both 170E and 131B. The structure felt the exact same for both of them. Professor Arant is a good lecturer, but I felt as if his notes would not really help during the homework since the questions on each homework are way harder than the ones in the textbook. It seems like the only way to do good on his homework and get answers is his office hours. He did not provide answers after the homework was due, which was very frustrating since you can't find them online either, so office hours is definitely a necessity. Exams are like the homework but harder, which made them terrible. It was like this in both classes, but you should be good if you go to every single office hour session.

One of the best math professors I've had! He takes time to explain topics thoroughly in lecture and his quizzes are always really similar to the lecture examples or homework, so it's easy to practice/be prepared. His homework is graded on completion, which eliminates the stress of checking your work and just lets you practice problems and I was always able to complete them by setting aside one night of the week. His exams were fair and even though they were 24 hour format, I was able to finish them pretty quickly.

I took this course during COVID-19. Professor Arant is nice in general. The first midterm is easy; the second midterm is kind of hard; the final is fine. The workload for this class comes from homework. Although the homework is graded upon completion, it still takes several hours to finish. Weekly quizzes are tricky, but if you fully understand his lecture notes, you are gonna be fine.
