Professor Longcore was very interesting in the beginning, but I got bored towards the end of the quarter. Overall, he's a funny guy. do NOT take this class if you don't plan on attending lecture. He bases his lectures on the text, but you still MUST attend lecture b/c he omits & adds his own info. Also, he doesn't post lecture notes online. GO TO LAB b/c it's worth 40% and it's easy points. Midterm is 25% & Final is 35%. Pick A.P. CAMARGO as your T.A. She's really nice & a fair grader. The class isn't as easy as ppl say it is. The Midterm and Final had a lot of detail.
He's a chill professor and it doesn't take half a brain to get an A in the class. But, he wasn't effective at all. First of all the required text is useless. Less than 30% of the test questions are from the readings. The rest are from his lecture presentations which merely consist of a bunch of pictures and barely any useful info. That means you actually need to pay attention to him--and if you have no interest in environmental geography that will be the most difficult thing to do. Tips: (try to) pay attention, do the labs (they're 40% of your final grade), and don't spend too much time with the readings. I seriously slept in class for 40 minutes every lecture, but I still got an A. That's how easy it is.
I enjoyed this class very much. Longcore made the lectures interesting--his notes/slides were very well organized and clear. The labs were ok, kinda dumb, but not hard at all. The tests were pretty easy, of course that depends on how well you study. And Longcore himself was funny and nice. I'd definitely recommend this class.
This course is pretty relaxed. Longcore is a young professor who cares about his students as in generally willing to help. I got a 54% on the midterm and still got a B in the class in the end. So don't even worry about the difficulty level here.
Professor Longcore is a very good lecturer. He's organized, he's concise and the way he relates the topics with which he lectures on to current events is very well blended together. However, several of his TAs are tools (which becomes a problem when labs are 40% of your grade, and the midterm and final are graded by the TAs) and he's uncompromising with re-grades. He doesn't so much as look at your test answers and insist that every grade has been rigorously place to standard. Which can be quite a disregard when you scan your final and realize there have definitely been some petty mark offs. So enjoy his lectures, hate his TAs, and don't expect to talk up any grades.
Longcore was a great prof and Geography 5 was also an awesome class. A lot of your grade comes from lab, which is not difficult at all. The midterm and final essentially consists of key terms. Lobby for Longcore to issue a study guide for these. There are absolutely no curves thrown at you on these exams are in the labs, so its like pay attention in class and youre all set. He was crazy good with peoples names too, and quite "hip". He is a fun guy [fungi?!?] and that totally opens up his lectures to be the same. Good times in geography 5.
p.s. if you chose a TA, totally go for Romi Rosen. she is the best TA I ever had and is soooo funny and cool. I LOVE ROMI FOREVER!!!
he is a GREAT lecturer. he always managed to keep my attention, even on boring science topics. he always inserts comical anecdotes that somehow relate, and makes very witty comments on a lot of things. and if you speak during lecture, he'll actually remember your name (in a class of 200).
the labs were easy, although the homework was always tedious busywork. the midterm and final weren't easy, but they were very straightforward and he told us the exact format and gave us a list of terms to know for each. i highly recommend this class =)
Someone mentioned how his ratings changed drastically...I believe so. He welcomed the classmates on the first day of the summer course. He wanted to get to know all the students by name (maybe a good thing or a bad thing for some of you...). He tried to relate to students with contemporary pop culture, but some of the outlines he has up can be a bit boring. Do study and listen in class because the exams can be quite tough if you miss something.
Professor Longcore is awesome. He makes average material interesting and makes you feel like the class is connected to your everyday life. He even tried his best to stay unbiased (in an area you can tell he is passionate about) and went out of his way to learn everyone's name. Those two hours went by really fast because of the story like way he presents the material.
Wow! What a change! I looked at the professor's rating back in 2nd quarter and it was terrible, but now, it's totally shifted. This can only mean one thing, Longcore reads his reviews and changes his teaching style to better suit the students, and that in my opinion is a mark of a great instructor. Sure, he IS biased, but he really makes no effort to INGRAIN his doctrines into everyone's brain. In fact, he straightout says in the beginning, and before every one of his little spiels, that his comments are all OPINION and the class can believe what they want. I read that a lot of people complained about some project in the past. Longcore abolished that idea. The tests were surprisingly easy and the lab sections were also straightforward and simple. I cannot emphasize enough the fun I had in this class... as well as the geography I learned, of course. He's a great guy. Ignore some of the previous comments because they no longer apply to Longcore. Take his class, expecially if you need to fulfill a Lab GE. Trust me.
