Loved Dr. Kane! She was so nice, a fair grader with fair exams. The only thing I didn't like about the course was that there was so much work for it. There were pre-lab quizzes, post lab homework, reading quizzes, launchpad homework, activities, etc. It was just an overload although some of them are easy points. Anyway, she is funny and engaging. I enjoyed going to class.

Highly recommend taking LS1 with Dr. Kane. It is an easy class, with lots of extra credit opportunities.

Fairly easy class with a lot of cushion points from clickers and online assignments. Exams were fairly easy and the averages were pretty high (~85% for midterm 1 and ~80 % midterm 2). Midterm 2 was more difficult just because there were was more material to cover. Read the slides before the exams and do the study guides she gives. Dr. Kane posts the slides before class so you dont need to take down a ton of notes, but it helps to jot down extra material she discusses in class.

The book isnt really that important. I did not read it and managed to get As on both exams. Clicker, online assignments, online quizzes, and lab assignments/quizzes really boost your grade so actually put effort into them.

Lab was pretty cool. There were some fun ones looking at different animals, and some other boring ones. Tiara was my TA and she was pretty chill. Lab assignments are straightforward and pretty easy.

Dr. Kane is a nice person. Lectures are engaging and shes pretty funny. Shes really welcoming if you go to her office hours and will definitely help you. Really recommend taking LS1 with her.

The tests were hard but she is an awesome professor. She is funny and helpful. She is very passionate in what she teaches and she has made me realize how much I don't want to be a Biology major no more. I don't have the passion to pursue biology as a major. I still want to pursue medicine but I want to major in something I love, probably political science.

Dr. Kane is one of the kindest and most approachable professors you'll encounter in your time at UCLA. Contrary to (all of) my other classes, I felt no hesitancy in asking questions in lecture or seeking help outside of class. She's fun and quirky, and the enthusiasm with which she approaches the class makes it all the more enjoyable. I cannot recommend her highly enough.

The class itself is almost entirely memorization. If you can't memorize a lot of information easily, I don't recommend taking this class. If you can, it's a breeze. Personally, I'm somewhere in the middle, and I still ended up with an A-. Much of the information you'll remember (or faintly recall) from high school Biology, and I've heard that AP or IB Bio covers most of the content in very similar detail, so if you did well in those classes this one should be no problem. Make sure you have a calendar for your schoolwork, because there are a lot of assignments (though nearly all of them are on the short end) and missing one or two could potentially impact your grade. Kane does drop your lowest score in some areas, though, so I wouldn't worry too much about this. Just make sure you get things in on time.

Tests are multiple choice. We had 1 hour, 50 minutes for 70 questions, though that may vary by class. Before the first exam, I only studied the night before and ended up with a 93%. The average was an 82. Hardly studied at all for the second exam (didn't even do four of the five chapters of reading), and ended up with an 81%. The average for that exam was 79. Scores on the final were nearly identical to the first midterm. Grading is a normal, straight scale (i.e. A = 93+, A- = 90-92.9, B+ = 87-89.9, etc.).

Labs are fairly easy, but there are a few difficult assignments sprinkled in which can be annoying. Overall, though, the labs are entertaining and are worth your time.

Mostly just memorization. Tests are hard so you have to study well ahead of time but otherwise the busy work is easy and you can often find a partner to work with to make it even easier.

I loved the professor but idk about the class. This class is the class that everyone seems to take after LS2 -4 so in my lecture of 340 students i would say about 50% already took the other LS classes so the averages on the tests were really high. The class is not curved but it was frustrating knowing that you were struggling and everyone else seems to be ahead of you. Every week we have Lab and the lab assignments are annoying and challenging. On ccle there are pre lab quizzes which are ridiculously difficult for no apparent reason. There is an online program that has assignments and quizzes every week. I only received a B+ in this class because i went to office hours and asked questions and studied extensively i also did all my quizzes and assignments with my friends helping each other. Good luck

One of the best professors at UCLA hands down. Truly an amazing teacher and such a caring person. Teachers like this are hard to come by at a big school and if you ever have the opportunity to take this class with her, please do!! I promise you won't regret it.

This class is okay. It is mainly an introduction of basic biology. I would suggest students who have doubts about the bio major to take this class first and re-consider, as it is also a GE.
Prof. Kane is funny and engaged, though she basically reads from the slides. So overall there is no need to take much notes in the class as you can find mostly everything she said on the slides, which she posts before class.
The hw on launchpad is relatively easy, the lab works are harder but the TAs are really helpful. Go to the OH!
