Todd is the goat. Took this class because I'm an EE major who was dreading taking CS 31 and 32 because they are req's for my major and I had very little CS experience. Leaving this class, I'm 95% sure I want to major in CS. Absolutely 1000% take this class if you have little to no coding experience and don't want to jump straight into CS 31 with a lot of experienced students. Lectures were very engaging and taught exactly what you needed for HW and tests, and were super straightforward. HW is 35% of grade and very logical and easy, maybe 2 hours a week on average. If you struggle on the HW, you are allowed to work with others and/or use the internet, so if you put in the work it's pretty much guaranteed you will do well. Tests were incredibly short and simple, so if you understand the HW's the tests will be light work. Overall super chill GPA boost and intro for people just getting into CS. Would take again 100%.

Professor Millstein reaffirmed my affinity for Computer Science. As someone without much prior experience, taking this class makes me feel much more prepared for CS 31 in the winter. This class was very straightforward in its expectations in terms of homework, as well as exams that consisted of problems below the difficulty of the discussion and homework problems. Time was never a problem for the homework or exams, and in fact the exams usually took less than half of the time allotted to complete them, and getting 100% on these exams was extremely doable as long as you didn't make any careless mistakes. My suggestion for the homework would be to make sure to run as many test cases as possible, especially cases such as a blank input or a unique input that you would not expect to make sure each problem works 100% of the time. In terms of the exams, if you just go over the lecture notes/problems, as well as the discussion section questions you will be fully prepared to do well in the exams.

Todd is the GOAT. His way of teaching made CS very easy to understand and he would always answer any questions people would have while providing examples as well. His lectures were really easy to follow and they didn't even feel like they were two hours half the time. His homeworks were pretty difficult, but he gave you more than enough time to complete them and they also gave us a lot of preparation for the mid-terms and final. Overall, he's a great professor and I would recommend him for anyone who wants to take CS30.

Todd Millstein is a great professor who can break down incredibly complex CS concepts into digestible lectures for individuals with no prior experience. I'm a CSE major with no previous CS/programming experience, and I cannot recommend CS30 as a class enough for anyone in a similar position. Taking an extra quarter before CS31 in this class will set you super far ahead of where you would fall otherwise. Professor Millstein gave lots of examples in lectures, separated his 2-hour lectures with a 10-minute break, and answered all questions with uniform enthusiasm, regardless of how behind or ahead of the class they were. People will heckle him all quarter asking to use some complex formula they learned in high school, but Millstein makes it very clear this is a class for individuals with no CS exposure. His homework and testing time limits are both very reasonable, though you might find yourself testing a half-baked function for 10 hours per week until you can account for certain input cases. The first midterm is lightwork, the second gets significantly harder, but he rounds out the class with a reasonable final that offers extra credit to students with an advanced understanding of the material. Todd may not be a very flashy professor, and he uses no PowerPoint slides, but he makes every effort to ensure that no student gets left behind. I highly recommend this class to any CS major or student who just wants to learn a bit about Python.

Professor Millstein is a great teacher and CS 30 itself is not a challenging course. He explains all the concepts in depth and gives plenty of examples as well as plenty of time to complete said examples. The homework was all manageable and there's always plenty of time to do them, as well as partial credit for late work (though note that the lowest homework grade is not dropped). The exams felt did not feel too hard nor did they feel too easy, and as such I feel very ready for CS 31.

Overall this class is very easy and Professor Millstein does a great job explaining concepts. His lectures are almost 2 hours long but you can tell he doesn't need the full two hours to get through the course material. This class is very light and your grade is mostly made up of the homeworks which are all straightforward. For someone that had no experience with coding coming into UCLA i would definitely recommend Professor Millstein.

Todd is a great lecturer and really got me interested in comp sci. There were homework assignments, two midterms, and a final. The homework assignments were very fair, I almost always finished them within one hour of starting them. The midterms were also very fair, although the second one was a bit more difficult than the first one. The final exam, I thought was very easy. Todd was great at explaining concepts and he also really took the time to answer any questions anyone had. I didn't really find the discussion section as well as the textbook useful. Just make sure you understand the homework's and the lectures and you should do well. The class overall is pretty easy, as I think it's just meant to get people interested in comp sci.

CS 30 with Professor Millstein is a valuable course to take if you're new to or have very little experience with CS. Lectures are clear and interesting, homework typically takes a few hours but is generally easy to understand, and exams are easy. Professor Millstein and his TAs are also very helpful and it's clear that they really care about their students.

Personally, I already had a bit of experience with CS because I took a course in high school. However, I still felt like I learned a lot of new, challenging, and valuable information with Professor Millstein. Overall, I highly recommend taking this course.

Todd Millstein is a legend of a kind . His kindness and simplicity is just amazing . The ease with which he introduces the "hard to grasp" concepts of CS is just impeccable . Each of his class was so engaging and for a person like me who had no CS experience it was indeed a treat . I honestly feel that this class helped me make my foundations strong which paid off heavily in CS 31 and CS 32

Todd is amazing! I took this class because I had no cs experience prior and I was scared to take cs31. He made me love cs so much; he is really clear and codes along class which is really nice. Class size was small and we were all really close, joking around in class which was great. His tests are super easy, really light; if you know what you're doing then they should be an easy 100. Projects are easy too; if you need help reach out and he is more than welcome to help. I think this class really lets you know if you should wanna go into cs or not. Overall, Todd was a great professor and if you have no coding experience I 100% recommend taking this class before cs31 for a better platform!
