TAKE THISSSS CLASSSSSSS WITH PROFESSOR K!!!! Man oh man is he the best most accommodating professor I have ever taken a class from EVER!!!!!! The writing assignments are graded somewhat harshly but they are super short, there aren't that many, and the films are super fun to watch. The quizzes are super easy if you watch the lectures and the films! You can definitely get an A in this class if you do the work! He frequently accommodated for covid stress, which everyone has!!! He even made the final optional because of how stressful everything right now is. Overall, I LOVEEE HIM AND I HIGHLYYYY RECCOMEND YOU TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
Professor K is a blessing to the UCLA film department. Genuinely learned so much about film and he was so accommodating during COVID. 10/10 would recommend this class and specifically Professor K.
Professor K is not only passionate about the subject matter but he also really cares about student learning - he put in a lot of effort to get to know/communicate with each student even though the class is a larger one! I learned so much and really loved watching all the films!! Professor K was also super accomodating with the quizzes and papers (esp in light of other assignments/stress)! The weekly MC quizzes were short and easy, especially if you watched the lectures. OVERALL, LOVED PROFESSOR K AND WOULD TOTALLY RECOMMEND YOU TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM!!
BEST CLASS AND BEST PROFESSOR EVER! Very engaging/interesting topics and he was really accommodating with deadlines. The workload was reasonable. Overall, going to school in LA, this is a great class to take because in a way, it's a history of the city (and even a bit of history of the university). Instead of having a textbook he assigned us PDF readings that pertained to the film, all of which were very interesting.
I learned a lot about film history from this class. The workload was pretty light and Professor Kushigemachi is extremely accommodating. We had short, easy quizzes twice a week on the film we watched, a primary source assignment, and a final essay that was made optional. He extended many deadlines and cancelled quizzes when there were other assignments due or if people were generally stressed (election week). The discussion sections were a bit dry, but I think that was just because of the Zoom format. Overall, Professor K was amazing and I would definitely take a class with him again.
Professor K is the most amazing professor! He genuinely cares about his students and is clearly very passionate about the history of film. He is so nice, approachable and understanding. I will absolutely take a class with him again
Prof. K's lectures were interesting and clearly organized. I appreciate the focus on films from historically underrepresented groups. And the information we learned about film and Hollywood history were cool!
The class wasn't particularly hard, but there was a lot of content to get through with all the lectures and movie screenings. I think if you pay attention and take some notes, you should be golden for all of the assignments (which aren't graded super hard).
I took this asynchronously online, so all of the lectures and film screenings were available on CCLE well ahead of time. There was usually a fairly easy quiz after each lecture/screening duo, and the lowest quiz was dropped. Due to COVID and other world events, quite a few of the quizzes were canceled and everyone was given a 10/10 on them. There were 4 discussion posts about the movies which were graded by the TA. We had a midterm paper based on interpreting primary sources and a final paper, but the final paper ended up becoming an extra credit assignment.
Overall, I enjoyed this class :)
Professor K is the BEST! Bet we see that on t-shirt before too long as this professor makes you love discussing film, reading about film and engaging on film. His reviews are accurate but don't be thinking it's an easy A without watching the lectures and the assigned films; and for readings you want to look out for what's mentioned in lecture. He does a lot of stuff to make sure you're following along like quizzes, discussion posts and a paper; but the grading is fair and you can talk to the professor if you feel like your TA missed points (happens). With the pandemic he's also being flexible and making sure we have enough time to get work in and he'll cancel posts if he thinks we have enough work and stress on our plates that week. Film choices are original, novel and all accessible online in some way or another, but I really appreciated that he provided all the assigned readings in links on CCLE every week too.
professor k was by far one of the my favorite professors my past quarter. i didn't know much about him going into his class through bruinwalk but he's everything you want in a prof during covid times. it's an asynchronous class and he is fully aware that it's hard for students to sit and listen to lengthy videos so he does his best to shorten them. his two weekly quizzes are not difficult at all and he drops the two lowest scores anyways which is super generous. he's just been so understanding in general given the stress of covid and that's really a testament to how passionate and caring of a professor he is.
the only reason i would put the easiness lower than 5 is because our writing is graded by TA's and i think depending on who you have, they can be harsher than other TA's
Professor Kushigemachi is an absolute king. He is the most accommodating Professor there is. He cancelled quizzes, discussions, and made the final optional to ease the stress of students. I was actually sad whenever he cancelled assignments because I enjoyed this class so much. Regardless of whether or not you’re knowledgeable in film, you will have a great time taking this course. The Professor’s lectures were entertaining and the films he assigned were engaging. I hope to take another course of his soon. 100% recommend.
