I don't really get why his reviews are so negative, this was probably the easiest upper div Math class I've ever taken. I only got a B+ because I missed a HW, otherwise I would have gotten an A or A-. The tests are really easy and his HW's were super short and easy. The content of 170S is very straightforward, and I didn't find his lectures confusing at all,
Not as bad as what mentioned in Bruinwalk. The materials before midterm is quite dry and proof based (not required in exam), and the midterm is quite challenging. However, the materials after midterm is super easy, you just need to plug in formulas. could drop midterm grades and professor grant curve for overall grades (90 for A, 87 for A-)
While it was difficult to follow along in lecture, he was very nice and helpful in office hours. He's not amazing, but he's definitely not as terrible as some reviews seem to say he is. I know this isn't a popular opinion, and doesn't reflect the experience of the majority of people who took this class, but I learned a lot about statistics and math in general by going to his office hours and trying to understand the proofs.
His exams were super easy, and grading was especially lenient our quarter thanks to the strike.
Really helpful during OH. If you wanna do well in this class, study the homework carefully and thoroughly and you will realize all of the stuff on the exams is based on the homework solutions (including the things you proved in the homework). The lecture is a little bit unclear but talking to him during OH clarifies a lot of confusion on both class content and homework problems.
If the content for 170S is brandly new for you, then you shall suffer by taking it. If you have learned 170S somewhere before, then that's another story.
In general, mentally torturesome. Not so recommended; the final is upcurved through.
