I didn't like going to lectures at all. I never understood what was going on because I felt that he was moving way to fast. I did take Calculus AB in high school, so I thought that the material was fairly easy. The midterms and the final was very difficult though....when I took the final, the mean was a 124/200. But, there's a HUGE curve which saves your grade. I managed to get a A-.
Professor Liggett's lectures can be a little bit dull but I personally like how straightforward his midterms and finals are. You do not have to go to the lectures but it helps because he does the problems that will basically be on the midterms and finals. Quizzes are easy....but dont miss your section...take the quiz. I personally went to the lectures about once a week and went to the section to take the quiz. 2 hours a week...not bad.
I easily got an A....i had over 92% raw score even without the curve. Do your hw, take the quiz, and you will be fine. His is definitely not the best lecturer but his is EXTREMELY fair when it comes to the exams. No trick questions, simply the applications of calculus. He gives you more than fair amount of partial credits if you got the method but did the math wrong. He is probably not the easiest 31A teacher, but as long as you are not too dumb, do the work....you won't somehow fail this class because again, he is extremely fair.
He's not as bad as people say he is. He's organized, concise, and the grading is fair. The final was a bit difficult, but everything is curved. I enjoyed his lectures and I'm taking 31B with him next quarter. It's not an easy A, but it's definitely not super hard either if you do your work!
His lectures were hard to understand, he didn't use a microphone and he mumbled. It is better to just learn from the book. The weekly quizzes often have one of the most abstract questions in the homework, and his tests were fairly difficult.
The professor talks really weird and he can be difficult to understand at times. In terms of how he lectures, he pretty much pulls examples straight from the book and if you have even a slight grasp of the material, you can probably just not go to lecture and just read straight from the book seeing as to how you'll end up getting the same thing out of both. In terms of homework, I liked how he made good use of the course website, which he constantly updated with homework assignments the day before they are assigned in lecture (which further makes it pointless to go to lecture if you just do the homework the day before). He also posts updates on midterm and finals information, which was helpful. For his examinations, he has weekly quizzes drawn from the homework, which shouldn't be that big a deal if you do the homework. His midterms and final were all written in the same manner in terms of the style of problem; very straightforward and tests how you can apply the concepts. Pretty much, if you can do all the problems in the book in each section with no problem, you'll score above the curve in all the exams.
