This class was absolutely incredible. I loved Tom's class, and it was probably one of the best classes I've taken at UCLA so far. It was definitely a breath of fresh air after the previous two quarters of the cluster. In this class, there were weekly readings and media clips that we had to watch to prepare for seminar in the morning. The readings were usually pretty short (they were often an academic paper that was 6-12 pages long) and never took me more than 40 minutes to finish. The longest reading we did was a novel called "The Girls" by Emma Cline. It was a very interesting book, though we didn't really do much with it besides discussing it in class. It was obvious that only like 3 people read the entire book so if you don't finish the whole thing it's not a big deal. The media clips that we watched ranged from entire movies to musicals to documentaries to short introductory videos-- there was not a single piece of media that wasn't engaging in my opinion. We also listened to a lot of music from the 60s and 70s that I'd never really heard before, so that was fun. Assignment wise, the class was pretty light. We had to do a shot chart and 1 page (double spaced) analysis for the musical Hair (1979). This was a fun activity and honestly pretty easy. Our other assignments were an outline and abstract for our final paper, a draft for our final paper, and our complete final paper. The grading for the paper is pretty lax and Tom gives a lot of good feedback that should guarantee you a good grade on the final paper. I would totally recommend this class and I'd absolutely take it again if I could!

Tom held a great seminar during spring quarter and his class, unlike the rest of the 60s cluster, was not a snooze! The material was interesting and I learned a lot about cults/new religious movements than I ever thought I wanted to. Tom's seminar was a easy Writing II "satisfier" and for that, I am grateful. Tom graded pretty easily during the seminar as well, so if you actually do the work for this class, you will definitely be good to go. Overall, this was a great close-off to a cluster that began horribly and for that, I have only Tom to thank. Take his seminar if you can!
