I really enjoyed the course; I got to view films I'd never seen before. But Gabriel has the most undecipherable accent I've ever heard; I'd basically just zone out during his lectures. My TA was great though (Laurel W). The class is pretty easy although I think I should've scored higher on the papers.
Professor Gabriel was at times hard to understand due to his accent, but I felt that I walked away from his class with some new perspectives and thoughts. Some of the films are boring, but the ones that do manage to keep your attention are interesting and thought provoking. The unique thing about Professor Gabriel's selection is that the movies are all diverse. The reader for the class is thick, and some of the readings are hard to follow. Overall though, the class isn't extremely tough. Sometimes you have to smooth out the edges on your own.
Gabriel's class was one of the best I have taken at UCLA. He is an all around friendly guy, the films he shows are exellent and the papers are not difficult to write.
My only criticism of the films shown Winter quarter 2004 were that there were no labor films shown. Of al lthe films that can discuss social change, the changes which take place in people's lives etc films dicussing those are very rich. He could have shown Bread and Roses ( about janitors in LA ) or Norma Rae or Harlen County USA but anyway, the films shown you will get a lot out of. I would even suggest going to the class even if you arent going to enroll just to watch them.
