This is honesly the worst professor I have ever encountered in my life. She is very rude, passive, and has her graders litterally take care of everything that has to do with the class. She refused to speak to me about my grades, as well as accused me of being lifeless because I wasn't enthusiastic in my response questions. DO NOT TAKE SOCIOLOGY OF EMOTIONS WITH TERRI ANDERSON. Worst teacher known to man...don't wast your time with this one. I didn't learn now one bit. L teacher if you ask me...

Honestly, this was one of the worst classes I have taken while in college (I am a junior). The TAs and the professor were not on the same page ever. The professor randomly chooses an assignment from a random section and grades it extremely harshly in comparison to how the TAs grade. The professor does not teach the students the latest technology regarding sociological research, which leaves students unaware of how to effectively conduct research in the 21st century. Every point = 1% in the class, so every single point is important, which makes the class very stressful. Lastly, she basically reads the book word for word to the class during lecture, which is extremely boring and counterproductive. I did not encounter one classmate who had a positive thing to say about this class.

The class is by no means an easy A. You have to put in the work. Here are a few pointers for doing well in the class:

1. Read the Syllabus - Professor Anderson is particularly strict regarding following instructions. Deviating from guidelines will most likely result in the loss of many grade points. (Each point is 1%.)
2. If you have questions, make sure to check with both Professor Anderson and your TA. They may or may not have conflicting views on how your paper should be graded. (From experience, either the professor or the TA will be grading you)
3. Print out/Write down lecture guidelines. (This will help you follow her lectures.)
4. It is advisable to not skip lectures as she gives five pop quizzes throughout the quarter which account for 20% of your final grade. Therefore, do the readings before each class.

Overall, the class was not very hard. The workload is manageable as she splits up various components of a sociological research project over the weeks of the quarter. Do your work on time. Go to office hours and ask questions. Read the syllabus and adhere to the guidelines.

I took Professor Anderson in the Fall '15 for SOC20 and it was my first quarter so I really didn't know what to expect. We didn't have a midterm or a final but we had 5 pop quizzes that are worth 20% of your grade and a research paper due at the end of the quarter that is 12-15 pages. The paper wasn't too bad because you worked on each paper during the quarter. I went to her office hours before she she wasn't really helpful. She just shut down my ideas but didn't stir me in the right direction either..
I would recommend her.

Terri Anderson has been awesome! She showed passion when it came to teaching about doing research and it helped me decide whether I want a Master's or Ph.D.

The workload is doable and an A is possible if you follow this information.
1- Do exactly as she and the TA's explain, do not deviate to "Big Ideas" as they might be the reason you'll lose points.
2- Do the readings (it's not bad) before class, that way you can compare what she is telling you in reference to the book.
3- Keep it simple. Don't overthink many of the questions in the quizzes.

The quizzes are a large part of your grade, so I suggest that you ask questions during the lecture if it doesn't correspond with the book. I noticed she uses specific wording during the lecture that might throw you off during the quiz, so stay sharp.

It could come to your advantage to use office hours, not only to get answers to your questions, but to express your plight and its relevance to the class. DO NOT COME OFF DESPERATE! Desperation will not get you sympathy, it will give her a headache and will annoy her (saw that happen with a classmate).

I ended up with an A, but I know plenty of C's, so please take my advice.

What is the workload for this class?

As in assignments, what type of midterms/finals/essays?

Pretty awful. I am currently taking the class. The subject matter is fascinating, but her teaching style makes it dull. She literally recites definitions from the text. Here, Ill give you a snapshot of class. "Data Cleaning, what is data cleaning? It is cleaning data. Exactly, I'm telling you guys, these are very simple..." No point in going to lectures, so people stopped going. Now she started giving pop quizzes to keep people coming to lecture. Its kinda funny though, people just come for the pop quiz, then leave. She takes her profession serious, and is passionate about sociology, and an interesting person. But as a professor, blah.

This is the EASIEST class I've taken at UCLA. There's no midterm or final (only your one research paper you have the entire quarter to write). I stopped going to lecture after week 1, did none of the reading, and got an A! This was probably partly due to the fact that I'd already written a research paper for my Soc 1 class but really, she makes this class super easy.

She is an awesome lecturer with a soothing voice (she sounds like a yoga instructor) and she made a huge effort to make this boring subject material fun by incorporating guest speakers who shared their research findings. She encourages students to choose research topics that interest them and asks people to share in lecture, so it's a really cool environment.

Even though she claims attendance in lecture is mandatory and the TAs even threaten that you'll get penalized if they don't see you in lecture, they have no way of enforcing that in 200+ person class so you really only have to go to discussion. If the class hadn't been from 4 to 5:50, I probably would have gone but I didn't feel like being in class that late if I could get an A without going.

Overall, TAKE HER! She's amazing and easy!
