Save yourself - do NOT take this professor!!! I want to start off by saying that this class had SO much potential. Learning about emotions was great!! BUT there are many things that made this class horrible. To begin with, the professor only held 2 live meetings throughout the quarter - both times she only talked about herself. In addition, Anderson was extremely insensitive to the circumstances students were going through during the pandemic. That is, she repeatedly told us that she was in her "cabin in the Rockies, finally catching up on Netflix shows" while we were literally dying here in Los Angeles due to wildfires and the surge in covid cases. She believed that we should be using "all this time we have inside to better our assignments." The privilege and classism poured out of professor Anderson's mouth. Furthermore, during one (of the two) live meetings this quarter, she told us that a student tried confiding in her that “they felt extremely under pressure because they were taking 4 heavy classes this quarter” - her response was "ha, try doing 9" because she is teaching 9 courses at different universities. This goes to show that not one of those classes is getting quality education from her. To make matters worse, Anderson admitted to recycling lectures she's used in past quarters. Frankly, we pay way too much in tuition and are going through different times for her to reuse lectures. In all, Professor Anderson is the most insensitive professor I have ever encountered in my life - she does not care about her students, not one bit. Extremely disappointed.

This course was an absolute nightmare. I felt unsupported by the instructor and to add insult to injury, my TA did not even read my midterm or offer any insightful feedback. This course was deeply problematic due to its workload and pace. As a result of living in a pandemic and taking three other courses, a dramatic election cycle, and a plethora of family issues arising, I found that Dr. Anderson was of no help. At multiple points during the quarter, she would assign an essay, discussion posts, and quiz in one week; surpassing every other course that I have taken at UCLA, in terms of difficulty, rigor, and ease of learning. During one of her alleged info sessions for an essay, Dr. Anderson continued to boast about how she has taught this course at a variety of institutions, in which students are currently enrolled in. My advice to Dr. Anderson would be to possibly consider withdrawing from some of those institutions so she can provide a better focus for the ones she has at hand and those to follow. Class is composed on 5 quizzes (1 she drops), weekly discussion post (500+words+2 replies), 3 essay (1,5-7pgs. 2,6-8pgs., 3,9-10pgs.)

The instructor was very inconsiderate. Just because this is our second quarter dealing with COVID does not make it any less of a concern. She said, and I quote, that we can actually benefit from taking her course during a pandemic because we can pause the lecture........ Okay and? She assigned so much work you would think we were only enrolled in just her course. She was extremely passive aggressive, and she makes it seem as though it is your fault for not understanding the material (during the two live zoom calls she did host.) It was as if we were being disrespectful when she simply just uploaded very VAGUE and very old lectures for us to watch in addition to countless reading. She seems to be very narcissistic also saying that our lives have changed for the better because of her and her course. When someone expressed how stressed we all were with the workload, she responded “I’ve been teaching online for 1000 years, and I know how to do it right. So if you’re stressed that’s not my fault.” Seriously? How ironic of a professor teaching Sociology of Emotions to be the one to lack EMPATHY. She noted during the zoom call that the only exception to any extensions was contracting COVID, but when a student finally did come to her and say they contracted it, she wasn’t as understanding and she had proclaimed to be and they had to rush to finish the assignment on time. We had a very thorough weekly discussion post in which we had to refer to the aforementioned extensive readings, and also reply to two classmates posts but we did not even know our discussion grades for most of the quarter. If anything we would receive a passive aggressive email to the entire class in which it was noted that some students answered incorrectly but as far as personal grades? Nothing. Then we had 5 timed quizzes, as well as 3 essays (5 pages, 8 pages, then 10 pages.) It seems as though after week 4 they were back to back with something large due each week. Quiz, essay, quiz, quiz, essay, for example. Again! This is not our only class. The class honestly didn’t ease up until week 10, and even then we still had a 9-10 page paper due during finals week. Many students opted for Pass/No pass because our grades were in the air, despite how much effort many of us put in during the entirety of the course. Ultimately, I would not take a course with her again. She told us she was at her wooden lodge and essentially having the time of her life. Meanwhile her students are breaking their necks to please her and she completely disregards our experiences and our own emotions. We should not have had to go through so much just to pass a class.

DO NOT EVER TAKE THIS CLASS OR THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU ACTUALLY LIKE YOURSELF! This is by far the WORST class I have ever taken at UCLA. I was so excited for this class but found myself EXTREMELY disappointed by how disrespectful and inconsiderate this professor was. The reading is insane, the lectures are dated, the essays KILLED ME, and overall, I just hated everything about his course. Do yourself a favor and never take any professor other than this one

This was a great class! I really enjoyed the material and content in this class. The professor is VERY organized and makes it very easy to follow along and understand the material. The readings are heavy for this class though, but she goes over them in class so it is easy to catch up if you fall behind. There are pop quizzes in this class, but she drops the lowest score and if you study your notes before each class, you will pass the quizzes and learn the material better.

Terri Anderson is probably one of the smartest most well-prepared professors I have ever encountered at UCLA. I'm so glad I somehow got off the waitlist bc I would've been real sad if I didn't get to take this class with her. Bottom line tho...TAKE THIS CLASS WITH TERRI!! Okay class structure:

Lecture: This is the only class I've actually wanted to go to lecture for bc every single one of her lecture presentations is like a mf Ted Talk. It's like she has perfectly timed out what she's going to say and does so in a way where she fully engages with the class. I don't think I've ever learned so much from a professor. Throughout the quarter, she does give out 5 pop quizzes at the end of class and doesn't tell you when she's giving them, so you're basically required to go to class (unless your TA is chill and tells you ahead of time). The pop quizzes are super easy tho as long as you're somewhat paying attention. It's a pretty reading-heavy class; ngl tho I only read like the first three weeks and stopped for the rest of the time and still came out with an A, so I wouldn't say it's absolutely necessary, but it helps. In terms of taking notes, she puts up every powerpoint on ccle after class so definitely try to jot down what she's saying rather than what's on slides (it's literally all quotes from readings) bc it can come to really help you when writing your papers.

Papers: Your grade is basically determined by three papers - 1st (15% of your grade), 2nd (20% of your grade), 3rd (25% of your grade). You wanna make sure that you have a good TA bc they grade the first two papers (mine was Eve and she was superrrr helpful and graded v fairly). The last paper is graded by Terri herself and will probably be graded the hardest. I will say that Terri realllyyyy likes for you to incorporate quotes from the readings into your writing but what's nice is that she gives you 'helpful/important readings' in her paper guidelines so you know exactly where you should be pulling from for all three papers. That being said, all three paper topics were pretty cool and I actually enjoyed writing them, which is always kinda nice considering I don't normally enjoy writing.

Discussion: it's mandatory but can be useful if you don't understand some of the readings. My TA, Eve, made our discussions a space for asking questions, and if no one had anything to ask or there was nothing to discuss she would end discussion early.

Overall, this was a pretty dope class and if you ever have the chance to take it with Terri, I would 100% do it. It might be a lil bit of work but it's all super interesting material and even if you write an essay or two the night before/morning of (like me lol) you can still manage an A!
