Won't be in LA for long.
This class isn't a ride in the park. You HAVE to keep up with the readings to do well. I re-read many readings to make sure that I got good pop quiz grades and I still did poorly on two, but one out of five quizzes is dropped. It can be hard to keep up with the readings especially because not only are you reading the material from the course reader, you have to read online articles and two books she forces you to buy. I never opened Brave New World and still got an A, so you don't really need to read that. Something you do need to read is her personal book This Is Not Required because they are many quiz questions about it. Also, one thing that really irked me is that on one of the quizzes, she decided to make 7/10 questions about a boring movie we had to watch and I got a literal F on it even though I watched the majority of the movie. The journals are easy points, and the essays are easy as long as you figure out exactly what your TA wants you to write. Go to their office hours. I liked this class--I felt like a learned a lot of things that I didn't know before. Getting an A is most definitely possible, it's just more work than expected. I am selling the course reader (it has writing in it), the This Book is Not Required (brand new with no writing) and Brave New World which I bought used that is written in. Email me at *************.
FALL 2014.
This class was pretty damn fascinating. It's been a few months, but I still think about the things I've learned hear, mainly because you learn about society and identity and yourself, so it sticks with you.
You have 2 papers, the first of which is pretty easy and the second of which is less easy, but still fine (it's like the first essay, but longer / more in-depth). I did both of them a day or two before and ended up with an A-minus on the first one (don't know what I got on the second one, but I did well in the class). There's also one general quiz, which was also easy and focuses purely on main concepts. Study your notes for that one (I didn't even have to look at the course reader).
There are also weekly, 1-2 page journals. Pretty casual, very very easy. Graded for completion. I enjoyed writing them most of the time, actually.
Prof. Anderson is also really cool. She has a quiet kind of voice, but you never struggle to hear her. I liked her a lot because she was so REASONABLE. Sociology can get touchy for people because you deal with a lot of controversial issues (hello, society), but she handles it all very well.
I imagine the person(s) who say this class is liberal or activist propaganda is a conservative who doesn't understand that sociology pertains to SOCIETY, which means you kind of HAVE to talk about race and racism, gender and sexism and transphobia, etc. etc. She was never propagandistic about it (although it says something that people can call wanting equality "liberal propaganda"--but that's not the point of this review). The point is that acknowledging these things and how they work and how widespread they are is clearly not for you if you insist on being racist, sexist, ignorant, etc., but should be fine if you're trying not to be those things.
Oh, and I should mention there's a lot of reading, some of which is a little dense or hard to understand. But she goes over everything in lecture pretty well, breaking it down so we can understand. The best part is that you're not quizzed on these readings beyond that easy, general quiz I already mentioned, so you can just sit and read them without worrying about memorization.
I feel pretty strongly that everyone should take this class to better understand how our society works, how it affects us and how we affect it, but even if you don't care about that, well, then, it's a pretty easy GE with not a ton of work. Definitely recommend it.
Selling the package of Sociology textbook (4th edition) + "This Book is Not Required" (it IS required, don't be fooled) for HALF the original price, so $52 (instead of $104). Good condition, no highlighting. Email ************* if you want to buy! :)
This class is a lot of work but if you keep up with readings and ask questions in discussion you will be fine! I'm a junior and still pull from/remember material from this class for other comm major courses.

I really enjoyed the lectures in this class and learned a lot, midterm needs lots of studying and final is a take home paper. With one short essay and 5 journals required in between. Lots of readings for the course. 8 books required, selling all for $100. Email me: *************
This class had me on a rollercoaster of emotions all quarter. I love sociology and thought the class would be easier than it was, but I spent double the time on this class than my other two classes just because of the huge amount of readings we had to have done by each class. The journals and essays that you have to write (one essay for midterm and one for finals) are interesting topics but your grade is VERY dependent on your TA: my friends often had better essays than me but their TA graded them more harshly. Also, even if you do the readings in-depth for each class, the quizzes are basically impossible and I was sure that it was going to destroy my grade. Anderson is a nice professor and I found her lectures interesting, but she is also very liberal and often requires (or wants) you to write essays/journals based on a liberal standpoint which can be difficult for a lot of people. Overall, not a bad class, but I would hesitate taking it unless you love sociology/don't mind a hard GE/don't mind the intense liberal aspect of the class.
Also, selling course reader, textbook and this book is not required: **********
