Professor Paul is an amazing gem within the history department and I would recommend anyone who hates research like I did to take her. Not only does she help you along your journey towards completing your project but she offers plenty of time outside of class to help if you reach out. One of my favorite memories in this class was taking a walking tour to Los Angeles where we explored the city. She is really passionate about her field and the seminars are never boring. If you want to get the most out of those read the assignments or else the conversations will suck. This is my third time taking her and I really cannot stress how important office hours are when trying to succeed in class. The books required can be found online or even at the public library. She even digitally uploaded a chapter we needed because she understood that with other classes books can get expensive. She was also really understanding about Covid-19 and moved our seminar completely online after a majority vote among my peers.
Professor Paul is literally the best Professor I’ve ever had at UCLA. She sincerely cares about her students’ education and is passionate about what she does. I’ve taken her for this class, along with others and she’s amazing. As for this class, the grade was made up by 5 weekly reflections on readings that are interesting (not difficult), participation in the class (also based on the weekly readings) and a choice between a final paper or project. During class time, there are expected field trips, however this quarter, the pandemic delayed these trips. You’ll love Professor Paul. I recommend everyone to take a class with her. I promise you won’t regret taking her.
Professor Paul is truly amazing. This was my first time in a public history course and she did an amazing job integrating every student into the class. She has a very upbeat and kind personality, and she puts in the effort in working with and knowing each student. The seminar was all discussion based, moderated by Paul, and they were informative, welcoming, and engaging. There are multiple readings and books per week with a reflection based on completion. She doesn’t make you read the full books but teaches you selective reading. We did not get to do all the tours of LA because of the pandemic, but we got to do one for two once campus opened! It was amazing! Professor Paul also offered to extend my final research presentation, giving me a unique opportunity to continue research in history after the class ended. I recommend her and her classes (:
