I took both Sociology 180A (Gender) and Sociology 134 with Professor Black and she is definitely my favorite professor at UCLA. The structure of her class is very clear from the beginning and her lectures are also very clear. She provides a lot of direction for both the midterm and final, providing information as to where the testing material is coming from (ie multiple choice questions were from the lecture slides and essay questions were from the readings and prompts were given out prior to test for preperation). Her powerpoints are posted online which is helpful, however, it is beneficial to attend class because she discusses the concepts in more depth and provides examples through the use of popular culture (ie movie clips and youtube videos) as well as articles from NY Times etc. She keeps the class engaged through the use of these mediums and applies the concepts to current news and issues. Professor Black is also VERY approachable in office hours as well as after lecture. She is not trying to trick students, but rather wants to provide as much direction as is fair and really takes feedback into consideration. She is not very difficult and her class is not very fast- paced, therefore, receiving a high grade should not be a problem! I highly recommend taking Professor Black.
