This class was heavily based on discussion of the novels. Dr. Drissi only spent a class or two talking about the structure of an essay, which is the five-paragraph formula. Other than that, we spent most of the time discussing what hair means culturally and socially. So I didn't really learn a lot about writing essays from her and I don't think I improved. But I went to her office hours and she did provide valuable comments on my essays. So if you want to do well in this class, definitely go to her office hours. However, she replies to email really slow, so definitely email her a few days prior. She also did offer many extra credit events that boosted our grades by 10% ish. Overall, Dr. Drissi is a really nice person and very funny in her lectures, yet I didn't really learn a lot about writing essays from her since the lectures were basically discussions on the readings.
Although I was in a class of 24 students, professor Drissi made me feel like a number in her class. The feedback I received from her in writing assignments always felt shallow. I love English Comp courses but I can’t say the same about this course. I reached to Professor Drissi for support several times but she either responded with passive aggressive comments such as “have you been going to my class” when I never missed a day of lecture and/or fail to address my questions/concerns.
Please, please take Dr. Drissi for this class. I cannot recommend her enough.
Dr. Drissi is extremely accommodating and a genuinely nice person. It was hard for her to keep everybody engaged over Zoom lectures but she always stayed engaged and energetic. The class theme was to dive into the doctor-patient relationships displayed in writings and some films. Initially I wasn't as interested but I actually learned quite a bit, which is shocking as a STEM major who hates English. I am blessed I had her my first quarter at UCLA. She has personally told me how I can fix my writing and has helped me incredibly.
The class was hardly time consuming. Don't forget this is Eng Comp 3D so its supposed to be even harder than just 3 but it wasn't. We had two total papers, one that was 2-paged worth 25% and one 6-7 paged final worth 30%. Participation (engagement and posting discussion answers on CCLE) was 25%. Then reading notebooks that were graded on completeness by the end of the quarter (so basically free points) was 20%. She also had extra credit. So its pretty hard to not do well in the class.
Overall, Dr. Drissi is a caring person who genuinely wants everybody to do well in her class. She will move due dates for you and grades nicely. Please if you take her, don't be those people who capitalize off her generosity. Engage in discussions and do the readings. You're here to learn!
Her class was one of the most disorganized classes that I have taken at UCLA. She always was late to every class session and traffic was always her excuses. The class consists of a lot of readings, for example, 60 pages of a story was due in a day and she wants a lot of discussions in her class since she does not have anything to teach. She sometimes asks questions in the class that never was in her readings. Moreover, she is not helpful at all. I sent my essay three times for her to look at it, but I never did get any feedback. She is very hard in her grading.
I would say that my time in Dr. Drissi's class was forgettable at most and unnecessarily stressful. Her class is set up in a seminar/discussion format which I did enjoy considering that class sizes were small. However, I found her to be condescending and unorganized which was a deterrence that outweighed the intimate setting of the class. The topic was on Medical Humanities often taking perspectives from a non-Eurocentric lens. The content itself was interesting, but the essays gave me stress that easily could've been avoided by clear instructions. The only way to succeed is to write what she wants to hear and go to her office hours (I learned that after the first essay). Getting an A is easy once you figure out what she wants, you just have to dig for it.
The prof is really nice, but this class was so disorganized. Nothing was uploaded to the assignments tab on canvas, and you had to check the syllabus every day to see when something was due. The whole process of figuring out what was due when, and how we were supposed to submit it was incredibly time consuming. That's what all the conversations in the groupme centered around. The papers weren't too bad, and the prof was really sweet and accommodating. She just had trouble figuring out the technology.
Didn't learn much about writing only learned how to analyze old photos and movie scenes. You don't know when to do a lot of the readings and the class is disorganized. The class was easy to get an A- or B in but anything higher is unclear how to obtain because she doesn't give much feedback. Drissi is a funny and nice hearted person but I would not take this class again. ALSO DON'T BUY THE BOOK SHE TELLS YOU TO, I WASTED $100 AND WE NEVER USED IT ONCE!!!
This class was okay at first but then Dr. Drissi started assigning 60 pages of reading for a couple of classes. The workload was relatively light. There were 2 long essays, a close reading notebook due almost every class, and a several CCLE discussion posts. But like many other writing classes, this class lacks a clear criteria. She does not specify how many points you need to get each letter grade. That makes me feel we are graded subjectively regardless of what score we got for each essay. Also, Dr. Drissi promised a second individual conference to revise our essay but she never sent us the link to book appointments after everyone was done with the first.
The lack of reviews (and low rating) made me skeptical about taking this class, BUT, Dr. Drissi was amazing! She is very helpful and understanding of everyone's circumstances and learning environment during this time.
I am not the best writer and when I heard about the 6-7 page final essay I began to worry but I believe she prepared us well for it. In fact, the final essay was pretty easy and straightforward. The topic was also very interesting (medical humanities) and the readings were pretty light. All in all, this was class was pretty easy, really recommend taking her class!
Loved the prof! She was so sweet and understanding about the circumstances in the pandemic. She'd extend deadlines and give us plenty of time to complete assignments. It was really nice to talk with her, she was always trying her best to get everyone to engage. There were a lot of breakout room activities, which are always awkward regardless of the class. The class was pretty discussion-based, but it wasn't intimidating to participate the way it is in other classes.
I was not interested in the course topic (medical humanities) before the class, but she made it interesting, and I really enjoyed the content! The readings were pretty short, not a heavy workload AT ALL. I would definitely take a class with her again.
