Best English class I have taken at UCLA. Dr. Lewak is incredibly helpful, insightful, and understands what it is like to be an English major in this day and age. The books we read were all great. Although there is a film component to this class, Dr. Lewak is mindful that most of us are not film students so she always gives background and explains in laymen terms. She is very helpful for the papers and will meet with you as long/ as many times as you would like. She also really cares about you developing strong writing skills and helps you produce the best work you can! She is very understanding and an approachable person. Overall, I loved the class.
Professor Lewak is the best professor I have had at UCLA. She works really hard to create an engaging environment for her students. She does not just want to lecture the entire time, she wants students to discuss how they feel about the works. She is also humble enough to admit when a student brings up a point that she has never thought of, and is the first to admit when her students change the way she thinks about an author or piece of literature. She loves the Beat Generation and uses a combination of film, music, and projects to make the literature come alive. Take her with ANY of her classes and you will learn a lot (not to mention that as long as you pay attention and absorb ANYTHING you will get a good grade. She does not look for mastery of material when grading, she looks for progress).
Hands down the best professor here at UCLA. The class material is also fantastic. There was not a thing on the syllabus that I did not enjoy. Dr. Lewak is also so incredibly helpful and really encourages you to become a better writer. She pushed me in a way that really helped advance my writing potential. You can tell she genuinely cares about her students.
