Quarter: Summer 2024
Grade: A

I really liked this class a lot and it is such a super easy GE to take during the summer. Each week there would be 2 Persuall lectures where you have to leave two comments, each at least 50 words, somewhere throughout the lecture, inputing your incite. You will receive 2pts for each lecture as long as you do just that. There were discussion posts each week, requiring citations from at least two of the readings or lecture videos posted for the week. This was really easy and I would just skim through most the readings to grab the general idea. Lastly, there were two "Mini-terms" one during Week 4 and another one during Week 6. The only thing I would critique is the lack of clarity on what they wanted for the Mini Terms, I was just a little confused on what exactly they were looking for, but I still received an A on both. I'm sure if you go to office hours this would be clarified but I never bothered to go lol. Overall, I liked this class a lot and I found it really inciteful and interesting.

if you love k-pop i could not recommend this GE enough!!! there is one 300 word discussion post a week (six total) with a video response to classmate and two midterm projects (5 min report or 1000 word essay). i found every assignment to be super easy just because i was genuinely interested in the topics. we discussed a lot of mainstream and nuanced issues and professor kim was extremely engaging in her lectures. this is one of the easiest and most fun GEs i've ever taken, HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!

I absolutely loved this class. As a fan of K-pop it was refreshing to be able to take a deep dive into the history of K-pop and how it evolved into the social icon it is. Prof. Kim was extremely engaging and made the lectures interesting, while also going into depth on the trends that built each generation of K-pop (up to gen 4).

As a K-pop fanatic that lands in the top 0.1% of listeners of both ITZY and Le Sserafim, I absolutely loved this class. This class's grade breakdown is 30% Mini-terms (15% Mini-term 1 due week 5, 15% Mini-term 2 due week 10), 30% Perusall entries (two lecture videos a week that you view on Perusall, just leave two 50+ word annotations per lecture on what you watched so far in the lecture), and 40% weekly discussion posts (20% written response of at least 300 words where you respond to at least 1 of the given questions, 20% of a video response to a classmate's discussion post that is at least 1.5 minutes).

Grading on Perusall entries was generous as you get 2/2 on them as long as you complete two annotations per lecture and don't completely BS them. Grading was very fair on the discussion posts; most people got between 18/20 and 20/20 on those as long as you meet the word requirement, cite two sources in your written response (one from that week's lecture with a time stamp and one from an assigned reading that covers what is covered in the lecture), and give proper commentary on your peer's discussion posts in the video responses. The discussion posts always pertained to the lecture videos and most got you to utilize your previous knowledge in K-pop songs and groups and tie into the concepts taught in the lecture.

Mini-terms consisted of either a 1000+ word essay or a 5+ minute video presentation. Topics of Mini-terms were creating your own K-pop group that will have social impact and another was connecting your knowledge of your current major to a topic in K-pop of your own creation.

Extra credit was given where you get 1% added to your overall grade for attending her specialized office hours that revolve around the Mini-terms. The late policy is very generous; late discussion boards and mini-terms will be marked down 5% per day late, and late Perusall annotations will be marked down 10% per day late.

Overall, the class workload was manageable as long as you don't wait three hours before the deadline to submit. This was the first class that I actually took seriously and was passionate about at UCLA, and I am currently a third year. My only criticism with the class was that there were no lecture slides provided, which forced me to type out notes on everything the professor was saying while the lecture was running. But 10/10 would take it again and another class with this professor.

I adore this class because it was so unique in the sense that I learned something new every lecture that occurred on Tuesday's and Thursday's. I was in the body and performance global studies section for this course, and I'm glad I took it not knowing what to expect. There were a lot of surprises in this class, so it kept me on my toes. I learned a lot about performance art and how much it means to society. I learned about how bodies interact over time with other bodies including death, gender, limits, habits, and other random but useful information. This class is a writing class so there are two essays to complete throughout the quarter. One of them is a performance analysis and the other is a film analysis, so be sure to do those as well as you can because they do count for most of your grade. The rest of your grade comes from attendance, 5 pop quizzes on some of the readings given every class, participation and a group project that occurs at the end of the quarter. The professor really cares about improvement and thoroughly wants you to do well. She knows what she's talking about, so listen. There is an extra credit opportunity to watch her give a K-POP lecture in Royce Hall, so do that because it was 2% of the final grade. Overall, I really enjoyed this class and appreciated that it was in a small group setting.
