Fall 2021 - Professor Brown really cares about the students he teaches. Even with the hiccups in technology or tests, he communicates quickly and is very fair whilst still challenging his students. Professor Brown's tests and quizzes were hard, as it was all conceptual, though many partial points are given as well as gimme questions that make sure the student has a basic understanding before going into the more complex questions. His grading was fair, with a generous curve and being able to do corrections for the midterm. Overall, this class was challenging, but Professor Brown did his best to help those who put the effort forth. I also loved every single one of his demonstrations! It was something that I did not have in previous classes due to Covid, so it was awesome to see the concepts applied to real world things.

Professor Brown is an awesome teacher for those students who don't mind thinking on a test. Granted, it's not plug and chug nor do you get cheat sheets but it's kept on such a simple level and he tells you what will be on the test before hand. The reason not everyone gets an A is because the tests he makes actually assess whether or not you can apply the material to situations that aren't exactly like HW problems. Overall, I think most people will retain what is learned in his class longer than material learned in other courses due to the fundamental but thorough presentation. Definitely recommend him to those students who want to do minimal work (i.e. no busy work) and can think well (recall + algebraic manipulation) on exams. If you don't like that style look for someone else. Oh, he's also a really nice guy and cares about learning. Just don't ask him to do an example with numbers because he doesn't believe plug and chug teaches anything that an understanding of the material can't provide.

I'd have to agree with a previous posting that Brown's teaching style is more complex than it should be for a Physics 10 class. He knows his material and truly cares for his students but it would help if he simplified his explanations a little more. His exams don't correlate very well with his way of teaching so you're better off learning from the book for the midterms and finals. The class overall isn't bad at all and don't worry if you get a low grade on the midterm or final. I barely got more than half right on the first midterm, did good on the second midterm and final and ended up with an A+ in the class. Simply put, Brown is a really nice guy...just put in the effort and it won't be too hard to get an A. =)

Stuart Brown has a nice personality, but his teaching styles are a bit deficient. He is an experimentalist, so he is much more knowledgeable about experimental psychics than theoretical physics. He taught the class with his own handouts, instead of using the book, and there were habitual inconsistencies in the formulation of his formulas in these handouts. Sometimes it seems he would change some notation throughout the prepared paper. I would really recommend physics students to take the 140B class from a theoretical physicist instead of an experimentalist.
