Winter 2018 - If one looks at grade distributions from last few years, one can easily observe that the reviewer below me is a noticeable anomaly. There are basically two possibilities: either there was a problem with the reviewer or there was a problem with the professor. Based on my experience with this class and Professor Steinberg, I would argue that there is a significantly higher chance that the former is true. Through his lectures, discussions and weekly assignments, I truly feel that my English writing and citations skills have largely improved. I agree that workload was very, very heavy; however, it's certainly doable if you put enough time. Also, describing his rubric as "his own crazy semiotic system" is quite unfair, as he clearly explains his marking system in a sheet of paper that you get in the first lecture. Yes, his handwriting is quite illegible, but again he explains everything if you ask him in person about his comments. Most importantly, I believe that it is incredibly rude to write an additional comment in a language that not all users of Bruinwalk can understand, especially if that comment is the gist of your review. For everyone's sake, the last three sentences briefly translate into: Do not take this old man's class, he is a hypocritical "white left*," a total racist, and an example of someone who is tolerant to himself but strict to others. His grades are only based on your initial/original performance , and he will not teach any new materials. He is also suspicious of discriminating Asian males. (Chinese is not my native tongue so the translation is by no means perfect. I learned the language in my high school, and I also used a dictionary and a bit of Google Translate) I am also an international student and also an Asian male, and I totally disagree with what the reviewer below has said about Professor Steinberg and his class. He is not racist at all and he does not discriminate against anyone. You'll get good grades in this class if you put enough effort. Finally, I have to say that this is just my perspective, so take my review (or any review) with a grain of salt. * See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baizuo

Professor Steinberg is seriously one of the best professors at UCLA. I took his class simply because many people said it was an easy A, but what I got out of it was much more valuable than that. Each day, he starts out the lecture with a really interesting quote that allows you to think about certain issues in a way that you have never thought of before. He is very knowledgable about the topics that he chooses to teach. He reads a lot of books and often brings them to the class to share his recommendations and experiences with them. He values everything that each student has to say, so it is easy for people to speak out when they normally don't in other classes. It is quite impressive how he remembers students' names and the specific papers that they have turned in. He allows revisions on all the papers that he assigns, and he is available and very helpful during his office hours. Use his office hours to your advantages because that is when he explains all the comments that he wrote on your paper because many students find it difficult to read his handwriting. His course is very relevant to today's world so many of us found it to be very interesting. It may seem cliche, but his course really does change your perspective on things and it opens your mind to a lot of new ideas. Definitely take this class if you can, it is worth your time.

Steinberg is so far the best Eng Comp professor I had. He's great during class discussions and really cares about his students. He really likes reading and encourages the whole class to read different books and articles he recommends, which are optional. However, we do have to read a book and write up summaries and opinion pieces about the articles he assigns. 4 Essays are required for the class. 1st essay is about shopping behaviors (3-5 pages). 2nd formal essay (4-5 pages). 3rd interview (no length requirement), which was fun and easy. 4th research paper (10 Pages). His grading system is also awesome, he points out your mistakes without correcting it himself so you have to correct it and learn your errors, which was great for teaching you how to write. He's highly recommended, very easy, and fun class to be in. By the way, I suck in writing and his class and this class was my first A in an English comp class at UCLA.
