The course does not give an introduction to sociology in the textbooky sense (I still don't know many sociological terms after taking the class), but rather Sherwood makes you think about your own life and society around you on your own. His lectures are interesting - he keeps the class engaged. He is a concerned and lively guy, and will remember your name if you talk in class. Participate during section. Participate during lecture (though it may seem daunting to speak in front of 200 people, Sherwood highly, highly values your participation in the lecture). Write high-quality papers that incorporate both personal experience and sociological concepts.

First, this is a "Thought Control" class in which you'll be prohibited to use "system's world" theories (i.e.Marx/Weber)to argue against this professor more favored "life world" theories (i.e. Durkheim/Parsons). Second, this is "A movie going class." If you don't like movies of any kind, don't bother to take this class because you'll hate it. Some movies shown in this class are DUMB and make no sense to class theories at all. Third, Prof. Sherwood and his theories is all over the place! He can't even generate a decent prompt for the final paper. Thank god! The TA is decent and helpful.

false consciousness(marx), disenchantment(weber), and solidarity(durkheim). all in the form of andy warhol. BRILLIANT. walk away from class with these concepts, and you will excel in the REST your sociology courses. i recommend taking this class as early as you can if you plan to major in the field. this is a once in a lifetime professor so be sure to attend this class and again, walk away with the aforementioned concepts. never, EVER boring. thank you professor sherwood =)

he can dish it. but he sure can't take it. dont get me wrong, he's an ok professor, but what he really likes is to "wow" you with his "awesome" knowledge. don't expect him to take anything you say to be brilliant or remotely interesting. he likes to disagree just to disagree, and will usually say the same thing you just did with slightly different wording as if it is somehow profound. also, he lets annoying students say the most gawdawfully painful comments.
