Lectures suck! No powerpoint, or slides, NOTHING. He is unorganized and booooooooooring. I could barely sit through his lectures because they were so pointless. You basically just have to memorize the study guide to get an A in this class. Easy A, but I'm not sure it was worth the misery of sitting in through his lectures. It's sad to say he's employed by our wonderful institution, he is not UCLA quality!
This class is a very easy A. Your grade consists of a midterm, a final, an 8 page essay (originally 10 pages but cut down by Professor Loza), and section participation. The midterm and finals are the exact same format with the same number of questions and take very little time to finish. They consist of memorization of terms (which are given to you) and listening to songs and identifying them. I can't speak for all the TA's but Leticia Soto is the nicest most caring TA I've ever met. She goes out of her way to make sure you get an A in the class and gives you a lot of extra help on the essay.
If you are not of Latin descent this class might be hard for you to follow. He talks very casually and lectures are a little disorganized, so you will be confused on what to take notes on. His whole lecture seems like a comment rather than a presentation of facts. It is possible to get a good grade, but don't expect to learn anything that will help you on the final/midterm in lecture. Do the listenings and the study guides and you can pass the class.
Loza is soooo laid back. He never starts class on time so don't show up on time. His lectures are a bit random. Yet, the videos and music are cool. Do not read the reader, just learn the tapes and go to tutoring and you will be fine. I got a 100% on the midterm and the final and I studied for maybe an hour. If you just want to take a laid back class this one is great!
