Professor Bilakovics is one of the most memorable instructors that I've had at UCLA-seek out his classes! This course explores the origins of American political thought, and the tensions inherent in democracy. Locke, Tocqueville, and John Stuart Mill were the primary sources when I took this. I really gained a greater appreciation for the delicacy of the American project, and much of Tocqueville's observations still ring true today. Expect to actually have to think through the material in depth, and articulate arguments derived from your thinking. Midterm and final of about 2000 words each, and a presentation of one of the weekly reading portions. Really rewarding experience. It was my first seminar, and it definitely helped me in subsequent classes.
